How much power can a starion gear box handle???
How much power can a starion gear box handle???
I know this has been talked about before, but I want to hear from people who have powerful starions and drive them regularly on the street.
And Im not talking about a gear box thats done 200,000ks etc.
What should a reconditioned box handle if driven properly????

My jb has done 40000 k's with 200+ hp atw untouched but then I'm just an oldie that doesent do burnouts or skids :(
But then again I know of someone who has managed to break 4 so I guess it comes down to how you drive
A recoed box usually uses the same gearset but with new bearings & seals so recoeing doesent make the gears any stronger

Well I might just fit the B2200 box and B2600 belhousing Ive got then...
Just a bit more work thats all.
Just to let every one know, the B2200 box looks the same as a RX7/B2600 but has a longer input shalft, about 12mm or so. It hits the end of the crank when you try and fit the box. And thats without the flywheel bolted on. Im going to have to find an RX7 shalft and get it fitted :(
Just something for those people who are looking to do this swap to watch out for.

yeah i'd sell it and get the rx7 box if i were u. rx7 box has better synchros aswell. they're designed for high rpm shifting. B22 box is designed for carrying heavy loads

I didnt know about the synchros.redzone wrote:yeah i'd sell it and get the rx7 box if i were u. rx7 box has better synchros aswell. they're designed for high rpm shifting. B22 box is designed for carrying heavy loads
The reasen I got the B2200 was the shifter is in the right spot and the gear ratios are better suited to the starion I thought. As the RX7 box is set up for a 4.10:1 diff ratio.
Maybe I should get a RX7 box and have the gear shift changed. And then try and find a 3.9 or even better 4.1 ratio diff gears. Ive got the 3.5 at the mo.
This site has heaps of good info on the swap http://www.projectzerog.com/rx7transmissions.shtml

id definately go the rx7 box jas
will hold the power much better than the starion
youve allready got the hard to find bellhousing
id go the rx7 over the b2200 aswell cos of what redzone said, they are remote shifter so you can shorten it to get it in the right place easily as all the rotary guys do this when putting them in the older ones, very common and easy mod

The synchros from a RX7 box should fit into the B2200 box tho. Its going to be pulled apart anyway to put the RX7 input shaft in....

another option if you dont want to change syncros just yet is to just get the input shaft machined down
guys who do rotary bongo conversions and keep the bongo gearbox and pro 7 racers who use mx5 gearboxes have a similar problem to you is to machine down the input shaft, dont even have to take apart the box it just gets done as is
and if the syncros end up spitting the dummy you could just change them then, no harm lost
that way you get the good ratios and may end up saving you $$ as rx7 syncros would be reasonalby pricey
i looked at getting a s1 rx7 box rebuilt when i had my last rotary and they were around $80 each new plus then labour as well, was looking at around 5 hours on the bench at what i assume would be around $50 an hour
you may end up having to do an extra gearbox change but thats no biggy
have you talked to a gbox place about the shaft?

No not yet. I should tho. Do you have a good gearbox guy that you have used in the past??S0LJAH wrote: have you talked to a gbox place about the shaft?
