Running without AFM.. a good idea or not?

Post by Fryman »

Greetz yall

Was on a 2am cruise.. park up to get subway 2eat. come back... crank the car... it wont start... rolls over but wont fire. Pop the bonnet. The intake hose from airbox to turbo is busted! the part that bolts onto the turbo is broken. Funny thing is, the part was bought from mitsu say 2 months ago BRAND NEW!

So i took it off.. tried to start.. and the beast starts! sit idle, and a light tap on the zoom pedal and it stutters and then goes! i unplugged karman and it seems to be running quite fine! now my question is .. will i do any damage to my internals not running the sensor? i have no filter on it.. so it looks like ill have to either fix/replace the intake hose, put steel mesh over the compressor side, pure jap drag stylez, or get a pod filter for it

Turbo sounds nuts! and the flutter makes it sound like the car has BOV.. probably running a shitload richer now. my fuel budget goes down the drain now..

Any bad things that could go wrong besides sandblasting my turbo please let me know!

Thanks :)

uuuuhhhhhh.... hrmmmm..... why is your fuel pump hardwired? without a signal from the afm is shouldent run the pump..... i THINK you will find the ECU is in get me home mode, i used to do this on the cordia, as long as you dial up 2000rpm or so and dont let it drop the thing hammers at the drags, but it dont like it aftewards, u need to disconect the battery for a while when u plug it back in or the ECU will ignore it.

I wouldn't. Mainly because of the fact that whilst messing around with the car one time, I disconnected the AFM. The car ran really REALLY quick, but it wouldn't idle, and starting was a problem unless you had your pedal to the metal!

Bottom line - fix it, replace it with another, or omit it entirely with the introduction of another EMS.

i done this once to experiment with the better flow, ran great! but yeh, on 'get me home' mode which was hella rich. finish the quick drive, got into the driveway where i let it idle a bit, went to take off again and it wouldn't let me run over 1k rpm... cut as soon as it hit 1k. had to put it back in on the spot to get to the end of the driveway :(

I had a broken hose on the turbo like everyone else has and it wasn't making a good seal. The car would idle, but died/backfired etc upon throttle application. It would sort-of drive, but not very well. Fixed it by cutting the turbo hose in half and cutting another turbo hose apart (think it was off a cordia) and taping then together... bodgy but fixed the problem!

Turbo sounds cool with the hose off though :) Nice whistle.

do any of you guys actualy run the standard fuel pump relay? with out the AFM hooked up the ECU wont start the pump. and from what i know you are better off with an AFM or with out one, a cracked hose would be worse as it will run lean..... mmmmm lean meat, BAD!

Funny thing is.. it seems to be running fine.. got comments that i blew flames once.. which seconds the notion of running rich. possibly an ecu get me home mode.. turbo sounds nuts! i dont wanna sandblast rogers car :(

It idles fine. sits quite well. a light tap on the accelerator sometimes it makes a pop noise.. but its like its normally driving 99.9% of the time. so its just gonna run rich hey..? i can live with paying for more fuel.

karmann is unplugged. plug her in and it rough idles then stalls.my main issue is not to kill engine internals. if it keeps this way ill go get a pod filter and make up an adaptor piece

Cant believe a brand new hose from bitsamissing the join onto the compressor side is broken .. what is this world coming 2..

as i have mentioned.. its not my car.. but i love these cars and am going to try to convince the guy to buy it off him and spend a lil fixing her up and fmic'ing it

I don't know.. dirty big gold coloured relay - seems to have the factory plug on it though. Mine was only running because most of the air was going through the engine. If I pulled the hose off, it stalled straight away.
