The initial series isn't that bad, its just all the ae86 dorifto wannabe's that its spawned that sucks.
I just got hold of series 1, 2 and 3 and have watched most of series one. Its silly but its fun to watch just because its so Jap, and the races in 3D are interesting. They also do a good job of building the tension.
I will prolly be getting series 4 when it all comes out.

Actually Scum, Initial D is a lot better than FATF. It's technically pretty accurate and very beleivable. Some of the plots are so realistic, they had to have come from drivers personal experience and not just the author's imagination.
Unlike FATF, it's all 100% achievable. They have some of the best technical advisors in the world to make sure of that.
It's also one of the only anime series I have ever seen founded 100% in reality, without any supernatural power, giant robots, time travel, ninja (or other unlikely skills) or strange physics. The other one IIC is Tombstones for Fireflies.
Think about it. How many people do you know who drive 10 second cars? really? They are pretty rare, but in FATF, they exist everywhere.
In Initial D, they are all almost unmodified cars. Slight mods if anything. You can find cars just like that on the local streets every day of the week!
The level of detail, brilliant plot and accurate portrayal of events is one of the reasons initial D has become a classic - The racing's pretty good too.
But yeah, there will be problems when it comes to Australia mainstream. Only a few CAMS affiliated clubs are starting to get into drift (none in Perth that I know of) and that means if you want to drift, it's on the streets. Not a good way to go.
Australian cities are unlike Japan. It's still illegal over there, but it's an unofficial national sport. Here, we'll end up with idiots fresh out of high school racing through built up areas.
But that's not really a detraction from the quality of the series. It's more an observation on the average aussie idiot who thinks they can drive and drift their falcodore.

Technicallly acurate?? your joking right?
those f1 drivers should go see the technical advisors then, cause drifting is the fastest way thru a corner and they go through taking the racing line... all this time theyve been getting it wrong.
Should pick me up one of those TRD engines that rev to 11krpm... make sure you get the tacho too as it wont work at all without it.

Its technically accurate to a point, the technical guff you hear on the cars is all pretty well thought out. Drifting is not a fast style of driving however, if it was, circuit racers would drift, not do everything to get an much grip as possible. The animation is very very good, but its not realistic, no way can you drift around tight hairpins at 100kmph. Its FANTASY, suspension of reality, thats what makes it so damn enjoyable. They do make the engine Bunta has put in the car, the Atlantic engine, and it does rev to 11k. The tacho does not stop the engine revving, its just that Takumi has no idea about the engine, so he dosent take it above the red-line on the old tach, i can see where you get that idea from cuss cuss, but its a loss in the translation.

From what I have been told drifting is the fastest way through a corner, but only when you are drifting all 4 wheels. It isnt the ass out drifting like the cartoon, it doesnt look any different to taking the corner normally. However there is one time when the ass out drifting is the fastest way through a corner is on a tight corner in rallying where drivers use the scandinavian flick.
I know, dun care. I don’t compare it to FATF but it does the same thing as fas as giving every car enthusiast a bad name.
