Pogress pics of stainless steel MPI

Post by igottasicjb »

i've started building my ss mpi manifold. i got a price fom tasman aviation engineering to CNC mill the flanges and they wanted 1400 bucks :wtf:
so instead i bought a miller which cost more but i can use it for many other projects.

i'm currently machining the rear flange. its taking a while, due to the fact stainless is hard and if i cut too fast it F#%ks the mill drill in seconds.

so far this has taken 13 hours to face and cut the basic shape. there is still another 10 hours or so till the rear flange is complete.

the plenums will be a similar shape to the greddy GTR style. it should be around the 5-5.5 ltrs in capacity and have an AU falcon 75mm throttle body. the runners will be 140mm long with bellmouths inside the plenum. not the best for off boost response and low down torque but the high end power should be awesome.

You could have had it Laser cut and then just milled it Flat (Haha) + the water galleries ?? :)
Computer games don't affect kids I mean if PacMan affected us as kids, we'd all be running around in darkened rooms, munching magic pills and listening to repetitive electronic music :D

Very cool...

But why not make it out of Aluminium?
You'd be able to machine it up in a 1/4 or the time...

laser cutting is a no go if you want to machine it after. Stainless work hardens and heat hardens like you wouldn't believe. a laser cutter would get the whole piece glowing red hot and then i would be throwing mill drills in the bin every 5 mins.

the rear water gallery is only going to be a DASH 6 weld on barb but the front will be fully machine out and contain my thermostat.

the main reason for stainless is my TIG is not set up to weld alloys, only mild and stainless steels.
plus as far as i know it will be the first ss MPI made for a starion (correct me if i'm wrong) and stainless polish's up alot better than alloy.

i have nearly finish the shape of the rear flange. i've faced both sides and the thicknes is now 9.75mm even across the whole surface.

once i've finished the manifold and i'm happy with its performance depending on my spare time i may be able to make a couple more of these manifolds, this won't be for some time yet but i will post an expression of interest when the time comes.
