Took my manifold to the workshop to get it faced today and we struck a small problem with it. I’m using a sonata MPI and the thermostat housing is at the back of the head. There was no cooling outlet on the MPI at the front so I had A.R.E make an ally tube come from the front to the thermostat housing.
Now the problem is that: the water pump pushes the coolant from front to the back of the block and then it travels up through to the head by water galleries. The problem is that the galleries are larger at the back of the head and progressively get small towards the front. This is done so that the easiest path for the coolant to go is from the pump through the block to the back then up through the head and then travel forward to the thermostat housing which on a factory manifold is at the front. Because my thermostat is at the rear the easiest path is to exit the head rather than flow to the front and back to the thermostat housing via the tube I had put in. This creates the potential to cook the front of the head due to the lack of coolant flow.
We are thinking of restricting the rear coolant outlet on the MPI to the same as the factory manifold to try and overcome this prob.
Not sure how the types of MPI go with this but thought this is pretty useful info.
