10 years and still not finished!

Post by DD Phil »

Heres a few pics of the evolution of my JA. I bought her back in the early 90s and went for V4 Simmons, Simmons said 7s and 8s were the biggest that would fit. I soon learned the 16x8s fitted great on the front and had the 7s re-made into 9s for the rear. I ran 225/45 Goodyear Eagle ZRs, cost me a damm fortune and were some of the biggest wheels around in the day!

I had the head ported, cam etc done by Steward Reid, a rally driver/mechanic who seemed to know more about Starions than anyone I'd met (back then). With a 3" mandrel bent exhaust it ran bloody hard on Avgas at 1 bar (without an intercooler omg what were we thinking back then!).

For some reason I lost the plot and stripped the car back to the bare shell and had it bead-blasted. The idiots wrecked the guards and bonnet, started my obsession with new parts. Every panel is brand new, doors, bonnet, guards the works. Virtually any part that bolted on was replaced, right down to the door hinges, doors handles, even the rear pillar moulds. I lost track of the cost on new parts at $13k.

The colour is "de Groot Purple" a custom devised by my uncle, it can still be ordered through Dupont. For some reason I pulled done the Simmons and had them re-coloured "mint", but it was 8 years ago!

You can see the Cobra Daytona seats and TOTAL purple harnesses in the above photo. The whole interior was completely re-trimmed, including the brand new Cobra seats in a velour I preferred at the time, very 90s!

The above photo shows the 16x9 sporting 245/45s at the rear. I figured 16x9s weren’t big enough and ordered 18x10s and 18x9s, unfortunately they cocked up the measurement on the 10s and I had to buy 2 new inners and outers in order to get them under the guards, but it was worth it. Most people don't believe an 18x10 and 285/30 fits under a standard guard, but here it is:

What's happening now is completely of the charts:

19x11 Simmons FR 19 with 305/25 for the rears
6G72 3000GT motor with custom intake and two Garret GT series turbos
MOTEC M800
Supra 6 speed with TRD close ratio gear set
Fully Seam welded body with chrome-molly cage
380mm 6 pot front brakes
340mm 6 port rear brakes

Construction had stalled for the last year or two due to work commitments, but come April she's going into "On Track" engineering (builds V8 Supercars and the like) to complete the cage and mount the motor. My good friend owns "Fantasy Performance" he and I will then get serious with the intake, exhaust and intercooler.

I'll post up some pics of the engine as soon as my gearbox arrives and the engineer (Mark Barnes) finishes the adaptor plate.

The mint went years ago, the FR18s are now fully polished, I sold them on another yellow Starion of mine, they are now on a wide-body 180SX.

A quick update.

I've just made an offer on another JA as a daily driver (I have problems).

I settled on a 6sp Supra box, it's at the engineer who is making an adaptor to mount it up to the 3000GT block.

The purple beast is booked in the week after Indy to finish the cage and mount the V6 and 6sp box. After that it comes home and we'll start playing manifolds.

Current thinking is a pair of Garett GT 30s or even 35/40s, depending on wether a 3.8lt bottom end will work with the quad cam heads.

I'll keep you posted.

Actually I've just spotted a blue JB in VIC, been in the same family since new.

Thinking about flying down later in the week to have a look.
