'81 Scorpion

Post by jwebb2876 »

Hi, I'm back :D
Anywho, it's a 1981 Mitsi Scorpion. 2.6l carby 5 speed. It was described as a "poor man's hachi" by some random on AE86DC, but I like to think of it as a poor man's Starion.
This is how she sits now:
Image
Plans are (stolen from my members rides thread on Auszoku, with a bit of editing):
Stock drivetrain, maybe the Magna flat-tops to bump the compression to around 10:1
Stock dual downdrafts (if I can find a pair) or EFI

Front sussy will be a mix of Mitsubishi, Nissan and Toyota parts.
Custom strut tops and strut brace (from a guy off Sigma-Galant)
S13 coilovers/hubs/brakes
MX62 Cressida LCA's
Selby's 24mm swaybar
I hear R32 calipers bolt to S13 gear, so that could be an option later on

Rear sussy will be a set of Koni adjustables with some Lovells lowered springs (in the mail :D)
Starion brakes (the IRS gear would need extensive fab work so no go there :( )

Once I'm finished with my P's I'm thinking ditch the anchortron for a SOHC 4G63T, Starion KM132 and an EX Lancer turdbro LSD.

If anyone's got a set of JA stockies they wanna get rid of let me know, I might have some money after rego if I'm lucky
Gotta find a grey Starion driver's seat, the stock one's like sitting on a milk crate with a pillow on it - comfy, but all the support of an park bench
An Otomoto Nardi copy and one of those 120mm SAAS shifters from SuperShit are coming too
I also need a RHF guard and a bonnet, plus a respray, but that can wait. I'm not overly fussed lol

cool mate that's awesome, I recently picked up another one too (that makes three in total, although am picking up a parts car in a couple days too)

Image

this one is a Jap import 'Galant GT', same 2L turbo with IRS as the Starion, cept it is the lower spec lightweight version with vinyl interior, wind up windows and manual steering.

Thanks :)
I'm super jealous, I've always wanted a Jap turbo Scorp but there's none here :(

there's a couple there apparently! Glen (RXCORP] has one, a Galant GT like mine above.

I've decided to wreck my Sapporo, it's a Euro spec model which was sold new in NZ in 1981, it's just far too gone rust wise. It was a factory GSR model too, so it had a twin carb 4G63 SOHC (with 6300rpm redline), IRS and four wheel disc brakes, as well as other Euro spec stuff like headlamp wipers/washers and rear fog lamps.

Image

the parts car I'm picking up today is also a NZ model Sapporo, except it's a facelift one with live axle rear end

In that photo it looks ok, it's rough as IRL though. Someone's egged it at some stage, the clear across the top is literally gone, there's rust (nowhere near as much as those two of DGs though :P) etc.
I've got a pair of Lovells low springs coming in the mail, and I'm TEMPORARILY going to chop some Falcon springs for the front until I can get some AJPS custom jobbies.
I've got a set of new Magna strut inserts and some near new Camira inserts, so I'm going to attempt to copy my mate's front setup and run stiffer FWD inserts in cut down Scorpion struts.
He runs Camira inserts, Superlows and a 24mm swaybar, and it turns heaps flatter than standard
anyone know whether JA centres will go in a Scorpion diff? What ratios are there? Ideally I'm after a 3.9, but anywhere in the 3.5-3.7 range would be heaps better than the stock 3.308. It's just too sluggish for my liking.
Anywho, it failed a blueslip last Thursday (not that I expected it to pass first time lol) on the locker, exhaust and having no grille (I hit a duck :x), so I'm fixing all that this weekend and going again on Monday.
I have a set of 14x6 +18 hotwire looking mesh rims with new 185/65's to go on too as the stock 5.5" rims have worn out 215's on them and I cbf swapping tyres :P
pics after rego/springs etc

Gonna sell it, I'm over not being able to find parts
I'll be getting an RT142 Corona with IRS and doing a 3SGE conversion.
If i can find an import Galant of a similar vintage I'll be on it like a shot lol

Because finding parts for an import galant will be easier??

If we all sold our cars because parts were hard to get this site would not exist, between here and http://www.sigma-galant.com/ I would think you could find almost anything you need.
If at first you don't succeed, maybe skydiving just wasn't your sport!

Come on where's your stamina, don't give up so easy. Nothing good is easy, if you stick with it i'm sure you will be extremely happy with it in the end.

What sort of parts are you chasing for it? allot of the parts for the scorps you should be able to steal from sigmas ect. if needed

I would also hit up the guys on sigma-galant they should be able to help you out, they are normally pretty good over there i'm a member and also own 2 scorpions and they have got me out a stack of times when i was in a pinch with finding bits i needed.

As for the Scorp being the poor mans starion, i would have to agree, i have owned about 3-4 of them before i finally "man'ed up" and bought a staz LOL

Suggestion if you are going to go duel carburetors and live with the pain of tuning them might as well go side draft, pick up some 45mm webbers or delletos but the car my be a bit thirsty/love a drink.
