I was talking to a mate who has been doing a bit in this area.
He set up a couple of 4 camera systems in some race cars, got recording devices (miniDV is the best value but a bit of a pain) a 4 channel video processor (does picture in picture stuff), 4 bullet cameras, & a mic.
But he couldn't get a full dash layout on the video, but was able to get lap times, track position and speed using Nokia N95's video out (old hat now) into the video processor and he used the racechrono software.
The screen was setup with a feed from 3 camera's, the whole screen out the front of the car, a small screen overlayed at the top left for the lap timing and small screen to the right for feed from the cabin, pedals, or rear of car.
It was all so complex so in his own car he will just have a single video feed. He plans to log all ECU parameters from his Autronic and will add air fuel ratio, and throttle position to the video as well.
As a comparison there is traqmate datalogger which Mark from www.gtpumps.com.au sells. $1400, ouch!
The GUI used in traqmate is good except for the twitching tacho needle.
Check this:
More info http://store.traqmate.com/
Your aftermarket ECU if it's pretty new can do a lot of the work.
But if not, another cost effective option is using a GPS datalogger from Gtech. http://www.gtechpro.com/prod.html
The SS is $199 or RR for $299.
Then using Trackvision software for $195 or $295 and your video camera and you're away.
http://www.trackvision.net/ shows supported data loggers & ECUs.
It seems that the more systems are incorporated and things done for you the more they cost !
Also, here's some good advice on setting up cars with vids and mics etc: http://www.kstreetstudio.com/software/bs4tv/index.html
Hope this helps those interested.

any link to the recording device? miniDV - does it run on 12v wired from the car or batteries?

The miniDV unit would be something like this:thrash wrote:any link to the recording device? miniDV - does it run on 12v wired from the car or batteries?

Footage goes onto an SD card.
This is basic but a mad price for what it is.
I guess you could wire it in if you use an appropriate step-down transformer.
Reduce fuel costs by 15-20% & cut emissions by 1/3rd...

ahhh it's a full camcorder.
i've actually been looking for a portable dvr that you could pop an sd card into and also wire separate cameras (e.g. cctv ones) into.. haven't been able to find one to suit yet.. any ideas?

Thrash, I think you posted something for this topic on Oldies Honeymoon thread. Go & delete it before someone else posts there and it's stuck forever!
