As the title says - how do you remove the the little black switch thingies without breaking the plastic off the metal lever?

Do you just keep tugging and prying until the pop off or break, or is there a method that involves a little more finesse and fewer broken pieces?

Nope. Nothing special, just yank them off.

Dont Yank them, you'll break the optic and then have no lumination. Get some cardboard, put it under a screwdriver on the dash fascia and to pry them off real slow.

after i got mine off with the dash out for recolor brown to black
i found 2 of the fibre optic line broken,but by chance had a dsh from a sigma about 1984 model i think and theifed it from that
