I installed my harness on the weekend and am now wondering if I put the shoulder straps in the wrong area.



I put the eye bolts in the rasied section between the rear struts mainly so I dont have to remove the bolts when the rear seat is in. I put a reinforcement plate as per the requirement for cams behind each eye bolt but am wondering in the event of a crash could that whole section actually come out?

Bao, can you post a pic of the exact mount, show the bottom as well if you can.

If its the thin sheet metal section im thinking of directly behind the back seats, i dont think id mount them there. The forces of a good head on crash may well rip that section right out as iirc its only tack welded in there.

lunacy- not that thin piece of metal sticking out from the back seat but the area that its connected welded to.

rad and panda - where do u get the second shoulder strap point? I recall only one point that is within cams acceptable range.

If the passenger points refer to the rear child restraint points, then the Jap spec car hasn't got any! There's just a makeshift point...which I suppose could be used.

Mal the passenger points refer to the seatbelt points for the rear passengers. The child restraint point would not be strong enough for a harness anyway.

Yeah that was the bit i was talking about. I personally wouldnt mount them there as that is quite thin steel, even with a backing plate, and is only spot welded.
But hard decision if you want to keep the back seat i guess

That's where I thought you meant. I'd be inclined to even weld lugs to the rear strut brace and mount them there. And be sure the welds on the brace are really good. Last thing you want is a bar in the back of the head.
Personally I don't like the belts being that long as I have ducks disease.
I am looking for other inspiration but will probably end up with tube welded to each side of the main hoop and have it bent back away from the seat backs. Then it can be at the perfect height too.
There won't be any climbing in the back after that though...

I wouldn't attach anything to the strut brace, the forces at work are all the wrong way. The bar would bend and the brackets would twist forward in a frontal impact. If the brace was a fully welded steel one (without the rose joints) then I would consider it.

Can I suggest you get a proper harness bar installed, that way you get a proper independent locating point at the correct height/angle and that will be strong enough in an impact. Mine is integrated into the roll cage but there are option for installing one with proper bracing that will withstand the loads in the event of an accident.

I dont think where you have mounted yours is strong enough, I'd be looking at some sort of bar welded and braced between the 2 rear strut towers.

Greg did bond rollcage have the option of a seperate harness bar when you bought your cage? I think for the meantime I might just drill into where the rear seats go.

The harness bar was an "add in" when I had the cage built/installed.

I'm pretty sure you could get one fabbed up that bolts to the strut tower and would serve the purpose. Some bar, welding and then drilling and bolting and it'd be done.
