Stereo Wiring

Can someone please tell me what each wire does on the connectors for the standard stereo in a JD Starion. I bought mine without a stereo and i want to put my cd player into it. I have a wiring diagram but it doesnt give me enough info.

nope..
but if u get a light globe (like an interior light or door light etc) u can check which is constant power and which is accessories.. once that is done u should be able to guess with the speaker wires, or try a little trial and error, connect one of the pairs of wires (from the wiring loom) up to the head unit and see which speaker plays music. earth shouldnt be too hard to rig up rofl

What he said. But make sure that you find the positive power source wires first, then do the speaker wires last. Also, there will be two +12V power wires, one is a constant supply (which can be used for the radio presets) and the other is a +12V switched supply, which is powered once the ignition is turned to trigger any accessories.

Generally, and this may not necessarily be the case for the Starion, red is ign +12V, yellow is constant +12v, black is earth, then you will have purple/blue/green/brown for speaker wires.

Shouldn't too hard to figure out otherwise.

and your probably better off figuring it out yourself rather than someone telling u exactly what each wire does as u will learn more but yeah, check which wires positive with ignition on and which is positive with the ignition off.. or do it dodgy like mine and connect both positive wires from the headunit to the consant power wire from the car.. lol.. i take the face off the head untit every time i get out so i dont care that it doesnt turn itself off, and u dont need to keys in the car to listen to the radio rofl

Definately need a multimeter. Find the 12V continuous (I think its a small black lead with red stripe), and the 12V ACC. The speaker leads will be in pairs - to find which is which buy one of those small square 9V batteries. Tap the speaker wires on the battery. The speaker it goes to will go 'click' for a second.

Tried and true method.

If you dont know how to use a multimeter etc, then its best to pay somebody or preferably ask a friend to show you what Im rambling about.

Personally I replace every wire except the +ACC link.

The power wires would be easy to find, the anntenna has got me stuffed though. only 2 speakers will be used as the rest will run off amps.

once u work out the two positive, neg, and the speaker wires there shouldnt be too many left to choose from for the antenna lol..
or u could look at the wire coming out of the antenna and then hope its the same colour at the head unit end..

I doubt you will be able to use the old speaker wires successfully, as they have a common negative return wire, which was ok for the old amplifier designs of '82. These days, the head units have to have seperate speaker wires for each speaker, as the amps are bridged output design.

Because i have no music at all in my car. and the spot where the tape player went has a big hole. which needs to be filled

Power antenna - crap forgot the wire colour, if this is what you're having trouble with, then just keep trying different wires that are not grounded. The electric in my GSR-3 ran fine off the Sony headdeck antenna power out line.

If you mean the main signal line, check under the passenger carpet (if you have one on the rear panel and not the roof). Im not sure where the roof one feeds, I guess up behind the steering wheel. Can't imagine why it would of been removed, its probably just hiding.

get some one with a volt meater and the black wire should be a ground and if u get a currant with the ignition off then that is batt, now when your ignition is on and then from another wire u will get a currant from that when the ignition is on but when u turn the key off then you should have nothing. I have 2 Ja Starions but both have had new and different wires out in them. the speakers should be easy just connect one by one the wire with a stripe words etc on it is the - and the other the +. just connect one by one and conferm which one is comming from which speaker and then hook them up in order. good luck

I had this problem a couple months ago, after testing many raw open end wires, blowing up fuses and destroying my clock (my hand bumped an old positive feed into an earth by accident) I found that the white wire with the black stripe is the one for the antenna. They are activated by a 12V DC feed so you can check this before making a tidy job of it.
