(SYD) WTD Non LSD Diff

Post by 1320ft »

Yes, you read right, I want a NON LSD diff.

Am willing to do a swap with cash my way for my LSD (small) unit. But would prefer to just buy one.

Tell me what you got.

What! I can't believe what I'm reading.....

I've got a small 3.9 open diff to swap. Actually would prefer 3.54 to get better fuel economy!!
Also, have a large open centre from a JD diff. Just centre!

Take both with cash adjustment! :D :D

Replying to PM's in order of how they came in.

Just so people understand whats happening, I would rather blow up an open diff with a full spool etc, rather than an LSD that could be put to better use. Plus the ratio's arnt right for an auto.

What ratio were you after to use with your auto box? 3.9, 4.22 or 4.6??

In all honesty, wouldn't you be better off with one of the larger diffs for that extra toughness and reliability?

He's going to use a spool....you'll snap driveshafts well before you'll snap a spool. Best to run the smaller diff for less weight. Strength or reliability won't be an issue.

if u get a spool made, get it with the large 6 bolt type half shafts, as the 4 bolt type ones WILL snap off inside the diff, mine did it running flat 13's...
Fibreglass airdams $370, fibreglass front bumpers $260, reco drag links $165, alloy radiators $925 (unpolished), h/l switch rebuilds $125, all plus freight.

So what diff is best to start with Mal's 3.9 Small or a 3.5 Large?

Do you need a large to run the 6 bolt half shafts?

3.5 or 3.9 large diff so you have the bigger crownwheel, and get the spool made to suit the 6 bolt type half shafts

How would you connect the spline end from a 6 bolt shaft to an open large diff? Can this be swapped with a 4 bolt shaft? Wouldn't that become its weakest point again?

I say that because I'm not aware of any 88-89 open diffs! :?

Might sound stupid but maybe it's an LSD behaving like an open. But surely he's had the back off it...

are u familiar with what a spool is Mal? basically it replaces the whole LSD or open type hemisphere.. it would be a full custom part for a starion so you could make it with whatever axle spline you want...
