that's because they were based on the opel senator of the time, and not originally a GMH design..
GMH decided to swap out the efficient but fairly gutless 4 cylinder opel engine for the holden 202 and 308.. making the car much less efficient, but much more suited to australian drivers..
my first car was a 1985 vk with an injected 202.. great car.. very comfortable.. and quite easy to drive except in the wet.. but it was far from efficient.. my friend's modded RB25DET powered R33 produced almost twice the power and consumed more or less the same number of litres per 100kms..

They're called Vauxhall Senators over here (UK). They are also identical to the Vauxhall Carlton/Opel Omega, which had someone in Vauxhall give it to someone in Lotus, which became the stupidly fast (fastest production car at the time) Lotus Carlton:
1987 Mitsubishi Starion 2.0 Turbo RHD with 88 - 90 engine (?), manual gearbox (MAP Sensor'd).
LSD, Intercooler, ABS, leather interior, air con

no lsd in mine.. when i first got it the rear tyres were almost bald.. i would sit there in the rain psining one wheel and going nowhere..
mind you this was before i knew how to drive manual.. so i was a bit of a lead foot.. accelorator was an on or off button.. nothing in between..
