EOI - 1985 JB
EOI - 1985 JB
hey people,
i might need to sell my staz, due to needing a work ute.
its a tidy car only a couple of minor problems, like no catch can so it leaves a few oil dots on the ground and i think the suspension could use some attention in the back, it only just passed roadworthy in October.
but other then that its a tight ship, has quite a few goodies, such as
full MPI setup including new Microtech installed by maztec in Melbourne late 2007. sonata inlet manifold, 4 bosch coils, xf throttle body, bosch fuel pump and a big "fuck off" 600x300x75 custom fit cooler. when i had it dyno tuned in October it put out 189.7hp at the rears on 6psi using a standard turbo but now with a fresh tco6 with t04 compressor wheel it should be slightly better. the motor in it is from my old ja that i wrote off about 2 years ago. that i spent about 5k doing silly things like full blueprint and it has only done around 10000km max due to the jb sitting there collecting dust when some Cu*t stole the original LTX-8 computer out of it
the car itself is a white JB. it has a couple of car park door dings on the side and a dint on the front LHS quarter panel from some fat arse sitting on it (i tried pushing it out from the inside but you can still see it a little bit.) other that that there are no signs of any accident history, that why i bought the car as a good shell for all my goodies. there is only one bit of rust on the car that i know of and its in the most common of all places bottom of the door close to the front guard. the interior is in very good condition as well its dark red
it makes me want to cry when i think how much i have spent on the car (being a combination of my old ja and now the jb) the last time i put it back on the road cost me close to 5k on road worthy issues and having to replace the Microech computer paying for tuning etc. etc. and i know im not going to even get a 1/4 of the amount i have payed but if it has to go, it has to go
sooooo if your interested or need any more info, let me know by PM, phone or even replying to this post. the sooner the better due to me starting work in about 2 or 3 weeks
thanks

As someone who has done things both the wrong way and the right way, its frustrating that people on this forum wont spend money to buy a set of forged pistons but will spend the same money trying "magical" combinations. No cast piston engine, no matter how "magical" will make good, consistent and reliable power.
Im not saying there is anything wrong with the car im just saying it doesn't provide a plaform to make more torque/power:
- A proper forged piston engine can be built for $5k which will make power how you want it that will support as much power as you need (>350rwhp). A cast piston engine becomes unreliable above 180rwhp. A 2.4 stroker could probably be built for this money.
- A good single coil setup (eg CDI setup as ran on V8 supercars) costs less than coil packs and is more reliable, invest the difference towards a 450 roller.
- A proper intercooler costs $1,000-1,500. Buy one new (eg. a good size garrett core with suitable end tanks). Cheaper intercoolers lose boost pressure (starving torque) and/or simply don't work, eg. don't cool intake air.
- A brand new ball bearing turbo costs only double what it costs to rebuild a TC06. A 450 roller is alot more responsive/linear than a TC06 and supports almost double the power.
I'd like to see more high powered street driven starions around and people are spending money in the wrong places.

My JB still makes 282 hp atw after app 50 000 klms using stock factory pistons (ceramic coated crowns ) using 16 psi & 7000 rpm's
It is driven to and from events so I guess I've been lucky or it may have had something to do with my engine builder & tuner
PS my stroker (being built atm ) has an all forged bottom end

Old Fart - Im not convinced that you are making 289rwhp? Have you dyno'ed the car at a sanctioned event or ran it down the 1/4? If you are running around 110mph down the 1/4 then you are making this power.
Dyno results can vary significantly. For example, big moz's claim that his car makes 189rwhp at 6 PSI boost, even though a standard TC06 wont flow enough at 6 PSI to make this power.
If you look in a mag like fast fours, how many 200+whp cars run cast pistons? Cast pistons are for standard cars, forged pistons are for street and race cars. Im not looking to run people down here but just validate what is being said and also bring my view to the table.
CAN AN ADMINISTRATOR MOVE POSTS FROM 2 ONWARDS INTO THE GENERAL DISCUSSION SECTION - Under a building a street car section or similar section. My posts aren't relevant to Big Moz selling his car, apologies :)

Yr fukn kidding me right? All u fukn collier people do is bring arguments to the table to start shit...and here we go again.
This is all a waste of fukn time.......no one long term on here has ever made any dud claims on what they have...firstly because it doesnt matter as power is only relevant to the weight it has to carry. I have 600hp...in a truck....moz has sheets, probably stained....old fart is too old (or wise, same thing) to have u disrespect what we all already know.
Formula for speed is 'remove weight'.
Formula for power is 'endless bank account'.

Chris my car was tuned by the same guy who tuned KIT on the same dyno in 4 th gear
This guy also does tuning for both APC & Mazfix & only does tuning
If you were happy to congratulate Kit on the result (314 hpatw ) I am at a loss as to your disblieveing my 282 hp atw result
Not wanting to start a bun fight but at least 3 forum members have driven or been passengers for hot laps and would be able to verify the performance
1/4 MILE drags are not my cup of tea as i perfer track days and sprints
When the car had only 220 atw (before the gt30 )a BMW M3 CSL(one of 25 in the country at that time ) WITH A CHIP WAS UNABLE TO MAKE ANY GROUND ON ME UP THE BACK STRAIGHT AT Qld Raceway and after he caught me under brakes at turn 3 I waved him to pass but he didn't even pull up beside me ( the driver came up to me in the pits to tell me that IT MADE MY DAY :D )
SO I THINK THAT MOST FAIR & OPEN MINDED PEOPLE WOULD AGREE THAT MY JB HAS A FAIR AMOUNT OF GRUNT
PS I am not disputing that a forged bottom end is the best way to go but was only relating my own personal experience .Hope you noticed that my stroker is being with Eagle rods & Wiseco pistons

Flav - My point is that for the money alot of people spend on their starions many could have a good 250+whp starion. >$5k is too much to spend on an engine without forgies when you should get the works for this price. A balanced / blueprinted engine is standard fare for a performance rebuild.
Weight reduction will make the car quicker but to do so you need to remove stuff the engineers that designed the car felt was important. Personally I can do without aircon but thats about it for a street car.
Old Fart - Im Troy. Not meaning to offend you but im genuinly surpised that you have gotten such performance and reliability using cast pistons. 280whp is alot of power from 2 litres (as you and I both appreciate) and the norm is to use forged pistons in such applications. Good luck with the stroker build, this will certianly make your car even more of a handful than it already sounds.
Cheers

Sorry 4 getting names mixed up . I was merely passing on my own personal experience with my engine .bodeo wrote:

maybe the reason I have been lucky ??? not to blow it up could be that it is properly warmed up so the temp gauge is above the first mark beforeI give it heaps & use a top grade oil (Martini synthetic $$$$$$$ not cheap ) always cool down using a turbo timer & use Nulon octane booster in 98octane fuel with Redline lead replacement additive & finally don't drive everywhere on the rev limiter

I know of guys who ran over 18 pound boost back in the 90's who simply 'heat reated' the cast pistons ( I did) - talk to John at Brisbane Turbo and Tuning. I know he did and at the end of his racing with the JA it had massive boost and power (over 400 motor HP I believe) and it did break a piston every couple of meets - top ring land. Cheaper to replace a cast one than forgies. The trick was to allow for the thermal expansion in the crown.
Troy...i can see from inexperience of prep. that $5000 on an engine may seem alot of money. I could easily blow $5000 on block and crank prep. for some serious power. It all depends on whats needed/wanted at the time from the customer. They ask, i make some sugestions, they get. He got a fair whack of stuff that's not mentioned.
So....Lets get back to selling his car.
