Mr Hyde, your 4g63 engines are dohc, this is sohc.

Im not doubting that this engine could possibly handle 500hp.
It has had some good work done to the bottom end.

What I am saying is that the engine is claimed to be a 500hp
engine but it has had nothing substantial done to the head or
anything else that will actually make more power.

I see that the leading bid is now over $1000. Good luck to
whoever buys it.

That's exactly right. You need $1000+ of head work on the 4G63 SOHC to flow anywhere near 500HP.

I thought it was only the standard camshaft that needed to be thrown out ?? In theory you can't port the cylinder head to increase area, only to increase the speed of air flow and from what I've seen, there isn't much more you can do to standard 8 or 12 valve heads which the factory hasn't done so........this should be where I mention 'double valve springs' are necessary :P

now where's Barney to back me up :D

Are you saying a standard head can flow enough to produce 500hp?

Well, I have seen a standard 12 valve DASH head and camshaft flow close to 400Hp at the engine..........

I assume dohc heads must be more expensive over there. I can get a complete turbo head at the local yard for 25usd... Thats with vc, cams and all....

If you can use a dohc, I dont see why anyone would even bother using the sohc.

Unless they are quite rare over there?

I guess you guys didnt get the eclipse. They are a dime a dozen here.

Well there hasn't been a car with a 4G63 DOHC since the VR4's stopped in 1992 (I think). We don't get the Eclipse because it's made in the US. However we have a good supply of DOHC's from the used engine importers.
They are not what I would say cheap but are at least available. A complete VR4 engine is about $1200-$1500 AUD.
We have the Hyundai DOHC stuff which is ok for some parts but it's not old enough to be real cheap yet.

I haven't, though I'm sure with the biggest turbo and camshaft, you can flow how much power you wish, just the efficiency level drops off badly and you probbly have to spin the motor past 12,000rpm......

Flappa, remember that no matter how much you change the cross-sectional area of flow, you can only oversize the valves by soo much, about 1mm or so, and then playing around the size of this area, affects the velocity of gases dramatically, which means it could go either way if the machinist isn't specialised in the Mitsubishi 8valve sohc heads

God that sucks. 1200a for an engine? I feel your pain now. I just bought a complete hyundai 4g63 for 100usd. Then I almost bought a complete turbo narrow 6 bolt 4g63 for 150...

Maybe I should start collecting some dohc heads.

Oh OK, I'll just do that then. What'll it cost in Toysrusland? Fifty bucks?
