WTB: Gearbox for research/rebuild.

Post by Superscan »

Looking at doing a narrow-block 5 speed gearbox (Scorpion 2.0L) with the Starion internals for one of my Twincam 4G63 projects.

It's going to be a N/A engine but with a bit more power, aiming for 130kw ATW).

Can't be bothered doing a block swap, and since I have a RVR head with the CAS on the front of the engine, I won't have to "massage" anything either.

A narrow block gearbox with Starion internals will be perfect, light and relatively strong.

Cheers.

completely unrelated, but would you mind posting some pics of the rvr head? Is the top cam gear cover the same as the standard head?

It's the same as the VR4 and HH/HG GSR heads.
The CAS is bolted on behind the inlet cam gear with an inductive pickup.

Not a great picture but the VR4 head is on the left and the RVR is on the right.

I'll take a few pics tomorrow.

Cheers.

Sorry Scott, I have been dragging my feet on the gearbox replacement on the GSR-V. I wanted to sort out the power steering first but no success on 2nd hand parts!

I have the spare gearbox for you and will be happy to drop off some time next week. Hopefully I can grab a reconditioned one from you when I am ready! :beer

Also, can you comment on these KM132 gearbox rebuild kits from the States. There are 3 types...the dearer one is for 88-89 widey box.

1. http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/390282267458 ... 1423.l2649

Not a problem. Figured you were busy getting other stuff done. :)

The MMC Transmission manual I have doesn't show any differences between 1 and 2.
No.: 3. is definitely the KM132-M.

There were several upgrades to the KM132-M
Reverse syncro.
Flanged rather than snap ringed bearings.
5th gear and spacer were made into 1 piece along with a few other minor mods.

BTW: the aluminium pan wasn't for gearbox strength, it was because the pressed metal plates were being damaged due to people jacking up the gearbox on it.

Cheers.

I remember looking at this myself.
This will help thrash & there's a reasonable pic half way down:

Reduce fuel costs by 15-20% & cut emissions by 1/3rd...
Increase engine performance & prolong engine life...
How?

So which kit should/can we use for our Starion boxes?
Thanks
