WTB: [VIC] Electronic Dizzy for MPI Setup

Post by JJH »

Anyone got an Electronic Dizzy, suitable for Starion 2ltr MPI upgrade, they want to move on?
Hoping someone can save me the searching/rummaging around exercise :D
PM me if you have something.

How common are HG/HH SOHC Galants over there? what about the early 90s SOHC Nimbus? Both should have the suitable optical dizzy.

Struggling to find any at local wreckers, although I only found out today about the Nimbus; going to do another run around this weekend to see if any have turned up.

Well, bugger me if I didn't stumble across an HG Galant in the wreckers yesterday; crack off the distributor cap and, hey presto, the 4+1 disc was staring at me.
39 bucks later, and a wet arse from a local downpour, and I believe I got what I need.
Now to get everything wired up...

well technically Starion dizzys are electronic with a hall effect sensor and ignition transistor module inside the distributor, it still retains the advancing weights and the vacuum advance/boost retard diaphragm - it works like you conventional dizzy. The optical distrubutors have no means of advancing or retarding the ignition, ie no weights and no vacuum/boost diaphragm attached. Inside, other than the rotor and shaft it has a disc with a certain number of slots and a optical pick up which then sends the information of exactly where abouts the engine is in crankshaft deg so the ECU knows which injectors to fire, and depending on the load of the engine the ECU can either advance or retard the ignition timing as it sends the signal to the coil to fire.

The DASH engines run the optical distributor, they also did away with the E101 knock control module - it seems the DASH ECU was quite a bit more advanced - pity they retained the horrible ECI setup.

Awesome stuff, sounds like the way to go over a stardard staz dizzy if your doing mods like you want too. I'll have to do some reading up on all of this tech stuff. Thanks mate

you'll need an aftermarket ECU in order to make use of the optical dizzy.
