Wireless Networking

Hi everyone,
Just wondering if any computer techies on this forum could help me out?
I just bought two wireless cards (1 PCMCIA and 1 PCI) and am trying to link up my desktop with my laptop. Trouble is, they both detect the cards and the network, but they dont seem to detect each other? Im trying to link them "ad hoc" if that helps any.

Make sure you have the same network name and also the same IP subnet.

Specifying IP's can usually help, WinXP is meant to run a DHCP server, but ill be buggered if i can ever get it to work...
specify one computer to "192.168.1.2" and the other to "192.168.1.3", and both subnets to "255.255.255.0". Do this by right clicking on network neighbourhood (or euquivilant), clicking on properties, selecting TCP/IP, a selecting properties again.

make sur both of the cards have a click in wher it says "this is a compuer to computer ad hoc...." in both cards properties, to get there right click the wireless card in network connections click wireless networks at the top then in avalible networks click the network and then click confgure and at the button click this is a coputer to com.......

Got the laptop wireless working with the school network, but i still cant get it to connect to the home comp. Yeah they are both selected to "ad hoc". Should i assign them IP addresses or should I let windows do it? I was told to let Windoze assign them automatically to connect to the school network.
I know its a bit masochistic to try and share a 56k connection btw two comps, but yeah, call me a masochist then (if i wasnt one, i wouldnt have bought a starion :p )

i have always found adding 'tci/ip' 'ipx/spx' and 'netbuei' is good for troubleshooting anything networking.

What OS (Operating Systems) are you running on the two machines?

Theyre both running XP Pro. I tried re-installing the IPX and TCP and NetBEUI protocols but still no banana..

XP Pro is a bastard to setup simple network connections.
You said XP Pro on both machines and one machine has external
dialup modem.
Use Network Setup Wizard under Network Connections.
Very handy and has solved any network problem I couldn't
fix manually.

Your home PC probably doesnt have DHCP enabled, so their IPs are different. Find out how, and enable the DHCP server on your home PC.

When you are at home and connected, look up your ip.
The do the same at school.
This will tell u something is going on.
And if the school is running DHCP.
