Could someone explain this VIN to me?

Post by UltimateLurker »

Brendan was kind enough to register his car, but I'm a little lost on what each digit means. The VIN is...

JDY7X24TG14000050

1: J = Country of manufacture, Japan
2: D = ?
3: Y = ?
4: 7 = ?
5: X = ?
6: 2 = ?
7: 4 = ?
8: T = ?
9: G = ?
10: 1 = ?
11: 4 = ?
12-17: = Production number

A US-Spec VIN looks like this...

JJ3CC54N1HZ004586, and the explanation...

1: J = Country of manufacture, Japan
2: J = Chrysler, A = Mitsubishi, B = Dodge, P = Plymouth
3: 3 = Passenger Car
4: C = Passive Belt, B = Manual Belt
5: C = Conquest/Starion
6: 5 = Premium
7: 4 = 3-door hatchback
8: N = 2.6 liter
9: 1 = Check Digit, could be any number of digits
10: H = Year (in this case, and '87)
11: Z = Okazaki Plant
12-17: = Production number

Year Codes:

’82 = C
’83 = D
’84 = E
’85 = F
’86 = G
’87 = H
’88 = J
’89 = K
’90 = L

Anyone care to fill in the blanks for me?

Soneone on here posted up a copy of the VIN designations in another thread that discussed VIN's. Try a search, UL. I will see if I can find it later.

Weird, my 11th digit (transmission type) is 1 - and it's 5 speed manual. Maybe it was slightly different for later models.

VINs varied country to country, and by year. Id go by the chassis code.

Thanks for the doc, Ill save it, put on website
When I get time Ill make a big collection of all this stuff for handy reference on a single page.

Another interesting fact. Neither of my Starions have VIN codes. Both are registered by their chassis codes + chassis number.
1997 Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution IV 4G63BT
1996 Nissan Maxima VQ30DE (for sale, suit someone who likes the feel of boats when driving)
