Why do we get things like this happening? He's upped his bid 4 times in the space of a minute, with no one else bidding in between (or so it seems to me)

Most likely he was entering a bid amount that was immediately beaten by someone's proxy bid. Hence he kept bidding until he beat the proxy (or gave up).

Other way around boys...he had a max bid limit of say $100...and when the other person went to bit 40...it auto gets it for him at 40...hence not seeing the other bid...
