starion or cordia

Post by gotrice? »

I want to get either a starion or a cordia early leaded models hope fully!
Which do you think is a Quicker car?
with the standard mods that is 2 1/2 exaust, intercooler, 12 psi

Which would hold up better to 20 psi
how much does it cost to rebuild an engine for this?

ok ummm im not an expert on this but ill have a stab at ure questions...

ive HEARD that the cordia is quicker down the quater stock standard by around .4 of a second, but who cares about .4 of a second when you could have your ass sliding out on you :D sounds like more fun to me anyway

20psi...just in general i dont think either engine is going to hold up at all if u throw 20psi at a standard box...maybe u can do this in a skyline...but the staz or cordz wont take it without some serious engine builds (forgies are a must here i believe)...

others will be able to answer ure questions a little better or correct my statements...

hope that helps

EDIT: for the rebuild it depends on what you are looking for, i believe a standard rebuild on a staz will set u back around 2500 to 3000...and if you are looking for a beefier rebuild with forgies and such then you are going to have to get a special quote cause prices tend to vary a fair bit...kinda like "how long is a piece of string"

Cordia's have a little less power and a smaller engine, but they're slightly quicker in a straight line due to less weight

starions have much better weight distribution, so if you care about handling, then that's the way you'd go.

You wouldn't want to boost either too much on the stock injection, as the standard computer doesn't cope well with high boost, and you wouldn't want much more than 14psi on standard internals. Don't know about cordia's, but the rest of the driveline should be able to take whatever power you can give it (unless you go really crazy).
Chris Collier (beyondthelimit.com.au) can build you a forge piston motor at a very competetive price and get you some good reliable power too.
He's in vic, if you're not in vic then someone in youir own state can recommend you someone good. Chris has some nice rebuilt starions or sale at the moment too

If you just want some cheap power, then a cordia is probably the easier option, it's much easier to throw a Vr4/evo motor in there :) and there'smore parts available.

But i wouldn't trade my starion for all the cordia's in the world

im not sure about the cordia > evo/vr4 conversion comment chris...not saying your wrong but reading through the cordiapower forum they seem to think its easier and more common on starions than on cordias.

EDIT: or at least thats what it sounded like when i was looking around the other day...

The vr4--> Cordia conversion is a bolt in job, with either a modded LHS mount or a CB(?) Lancer mount required for it it fit snugly. It bolts up to the Cordia box, too. Now, the vr4->Starion conversion is a lot more complex.

Don't ask that here.
just do a search in the tech section and you'll find plenty of posts about it.
Or search in the show and shine section too, there was one posted in there a while ago that mentioned what mods were required.

I would of imagined the Cordia VR4 swap would be easier being east/west *giggles* as aposed to north/south of the staz. And I swear Ive seen more VR4s in Cordz than Starions.

Personally, if I had my time over again, I would go straight for a Widebody Straion, aka GSR-VR and set-up the 2.6L for 600+Hp or put the DOHC 4G63 Engine in it, eitherway they both have off the shelf aftermarket bolt on upgrades from over in the States at very very good prices :P

The only real problem with the Cordia's is the trailing arm suspension set-up at the rear, the drum brakes and the inferior interior to the Starion's

I can vouch for that comment on the braking system of the cordia. Having owned an '84 AA ex-highway pursuit (factory intercooled & chipped) non-unleaded TC-06 cordia 10 years ago , it was admittedly a lot of fun , went like hot shit of a shovel , but it was ashame it did not stop as well as it went. As for street racing , it used to scare me with the amount of torque steer this thing developed , and I take my hat off to anyone who is willing to tromp their VR-4 powered cordia at the lights and stop it from trying to change lanes all by itself. Another bad trait (as with all FWD's) is the overabundance of understeer. The starions also have understeer (built in for safety) , but is easily convertible with your accelerator. U cannot do this with a cordia. They are a good bang for the buck , parts are no doubt easier to get than for the starion , but if you are a car enthusiast , get the starion , if you are a hoon , get a cordia. As I mentioned , the brakes are the weakest point of cordia's (and transmissions) , and the brakes were the demise of mine.
