This has convinced me i shouldn't be allowed near a spanner for a week, its about the stupidest thing ive ever done when it comes to cars... a total oversight.
As some of you might have seen, i changed the turbo, and added an intercooler to my car the other day, it was all factory starion gear, so no majour hassels to fit, just a bit of cutting here and there. The turbo i aquired felt in pretty good condition, and used to be on my old car, it never gave me any problems there, so i was expecting it to be sweet as. I put the thing back together, clamped on the exhaust housing with some sealant, bolted on the WG actuator, made a gasket and bolted on the oil return pipe. Bout an hour later it was all fitted to the car, i clean up and fired her up. SWEET! started first pop, sounds much nicer than before, as there are no exhaust leaks. COOL!
Headed inside, washed my hands and let it idle for a couple of mins, came out and its chugging blueish smoke, stinking of burnt oil. Bugger i thought, the seals are gone, ahh well, i have a couple of other mitsy CHRA unit, i'll try another tomorrow. No biggie.
Tomorrow comes, i strap on my overalls, remove the turbo and take it to the garage to pry it apart and clean up the housings. After pouring all the oil out of it, about 500ml (no shit), I took off the oil return pipe, screamed, kicked myself in the face, ran face first into the garage door and passed out. Sometime later i woke up and had a good chuckle. You see people, when you make a gasket, its very important to MAKE A FUCKING HOLE IN IT SO THE OIL CAN ACTUALLY PASS! Hahahaha. I punched out the boltholes fine, then put it together, effectivley sealing off the oil return pipe. God damn. I Figured i'd totally stuffed the seals now, but i put it back together and tried it out anyway... After all the residual oil burned off, it seems to be going sweet as, quiet, no leaks and best of all, NO SMOKE!
Now hows that for moronic? eh? eh?
Zac.
