DOHC v MPI.........

Hi, just spoke to a fellow uk starion owner. He has done the DOHC evo 3 modification. Now here goes the intresting part. Before he did the DOHC evo 3 head convertion, he had done previously a mpi convertion and he had told me that knowing what he knows now he would have kept it on the mpi set up. What do you guys think and why?
I'm at the cross roads now and worried I go down the wrong road and regret doing the evo 3 convertion. Not only it could be a costly mistake but it could be a timely mistake.

IF money is not a problem then go Twin Cam as it will have a wider power band however I would have remained single cam but for a bad tune that cost a new motor.
MPI will need a new EMS .The TC can reuse the donor cars factory computer.
It is easy to make 300 hp ATW with MPI and the right mods.

I have mpi in my car at the moment but I now want to build a high compression twin cam, I'd say stick with the twin cam your almost there

Plus depending on wht you want thee at use thee vl loom and ecu and you will have a fast smooth car with good fuel efficiency

With my old 62 including MPI setup the power band was ridiculous...the VR4 doesn't make the same "exciting" drive..........the old 62 would change lanes easily......you just needed to know which way to pull the steering wheel........the VR4 makes more torque, but is less "fun" to drive.

He said the convertion for the mpi was pretty straight forward and to drive was more fun compared to the dohc set up, he said he's had lots of problems with the dohc and simply he wouldn't do it again.

The single cam won't bend valves if you break a belt and the TC will and there are 16 of them if that happens :(

Thanks guys for all the replies. I've reached a decision, I am continuing down the dohc route as I've invested so much money and time. I've got the loom and ecu which is almost everything I need. If I go down the mpi route I would need a different ecu and the mpi manifold.

No reason you can't use the DOHC EVO ECU's on a SOHC MPI setup, it's what I'm doing.

I have no real reason for stay SOHC with my red car, except that my black one will be DOHC, so best to have one of each?

Yeah when I was tossing up between mpi and dohc, the interference bit worried me..

plus I had all the gear for mpi and then some - had a full set up, plus extra bits such as an extra sonata manifold etc. I just never put it in. Back then I was more naive than I am now, so I thought my car was so slow it would only have had around 60-70rwkw, and that I would be happy with 170-180rwkw with the mpi (and most people who had mpi back then seemed to be under the 200rwkw mark).

Then I had my car on the dyno just to see what it was actually making, and it was at 99rwkw.. and then I thought :shock: i'm not gonna be happy with 180rwkw if i thought ~100rwkw was slow..

And then I got lucky and a dohc setup came up for sale for cheap and I grabbed it. Never looked back. I don't regret it :)
