While I'm all for death destruction and mayhem at times, I'd have to say; please don't hack your Staz up. You might not think so now, but I'd bet you'd regret it if you did!
I know exactly how you feel. If I sit down and think about how much money I have poured into my JA, or how much time out of the time that I've owned it, that it wasn't able to be driven, I'd probably cry.
My philosophy is simple; don't let it beat you! Also, consider the alternatives to owning a Starion...

CORDIA - Same age and same probs really
SCORPION - gotta love 'em! (I owned a GH) see Cordia
CELICA - if it's the same age it's a try hard Starion. If it's older, you may have to pour some money into it anyway, and suffer the same sort of heartaches!
SILVIA/180SX - nice car, but they are everywhere. They cost a lot more to buy than a Starion too.
SUPRA - see Celica, otherwise they are too expensive. Nice though!
RX-7 - which one? how much? old ones are very iffy!
929 coupe - nice, but slow. Very expensive to fix too! Especially the ridiculous electronic suspension! OUCH!!!!
GAZELLE- mundane, but go alright. Good luck finding parts though!
VORTEX - weird, but cool. Cheap enough to buy, and if you get a 4WD turbo, they go alright too. Vastly unknown car though, and parts are a problem.
300ZX - slow, even with a turbo, but rather nice. Targa roof tends to leak with age though. The last shape was by far the nicest, and fastest. Not anywhere the Starion price bracket though.
280ZX - slow, and big! You can get them to go nicely, but you'll need a malleable bank manager.
260Z - expensive to buy, but definitely very nice. These either look like they've been dug up, or someone else has done all of the hard work, and is hoping to recoup their losses.
SOARER - nice toys, but the newer one is better, if you can handle the price tag!

There are more cars to consider, but these are probably the closest Starion price/value equivalents.
Of course, everyone has their own opinion, and I will, no doubt, be disagreed with. However, those who know me, and have met me know that I speak from experience, or I don't say a word. I have driven all of the above cars, alot, and have known someone who has owned at least one of them.
In short, I still own a Starion after 7 1/2 years, because I still see the potential. I also like to be different, as I suspect alot of you do too

Cam,
always know that help is just a message away! That's why we're all here!

I love my car and i really want to keep it and i will as long as it lasts for the next year. But depending on how many problems i have in the year i may kill it. Im looking for a shitta so i can put the staz off the road and pour some more money into it and fix it. I know that i wanna keep this car but im just sick of the problems, one after the other. And in reality i cant aford to have it off the road to fix anything right now

Sorry to say this but if your after a reliable everday car, get something else. Starions are very complicated and very old, and basically most of the electronics really need replacing by now.
But at the end of the day most old cars allways need something done to them. I spose most starions have spent a large amount of their lives sitting in a garage waiting to be fixed, which is a shame as they are a great car with huge potential. :D
Dont hack it up, rare cars need a little respect

yeah... these cars are ever so expensive.. but really.. the potential is there to own a rare car with superb qualaties....... but u really have to question weather you can afford to do it or if it'll join the ranks of starions acting as part-time glass houses..

Heya cam, if you start attacking at it with an axe you are reducing the amount of places available for an Austarion sticker!

If you are gonna hack it, i want you to sit on the side of the road, count all the commodores that go past, then count all the starions that go past :P once youve counted more starions going past (per hour) you have permission to destroy

I only bought my staz a month ago but already i am loving the car, first of all i bought it because i wanted a basic shitter to get by until i was married (april 04). But in the first week of replacing vacuum hoses and tightening neglected items etc. I have found ample power with its share of problems (no problems at the moment thank god). But when i look at it for me atleast, it is a car that has tought me so much mechanically it is truely worth it, i am not afraid to break somthing or get my hands dirty with this car as i know a bunch of other starion owners are there for help (community). So don't hack it up think about the bigger picture like the face of a commadore driver who just had their ass whipped and handed back to them in a bowl..... mmmm i love these memories.

Ok now when it comes to voting time write my name on the ballot paper thank you.... :D

Its what ive wanted to do and its what im going to get to do. But knowing the things that im going to have to do to the car its going to take me a long time and alot of money. But i plan to come out of it with a show worthy car :D

Speaking of which when i get my replacement daily driver... ie. some family car. The staz will become the race car and thus putting me in the syd staz boys backyard every weekend to get friendly advice and the occasional "piss off you mongie bastard" :) Then its all CAMS CAMS CAMS from there :D

marry that girl

Cam,

Any girl who gives you a car so you can keep your Starion needs to be married.

Secondly, having just about finished Maries GOTSOM, we can tell you that they absorb money. But its money we have knowingly and wantingly spent to restore the car back to better than new. You will spend $10-15K easily. For that money you CAN if you want go out and buy an Excel. Which would you prefer to own and drive. I know Marie's answer.

The fact is that most guys (and girls) buy Starions because the initial purchase price is low compared to late model 2Lt turbo jobbies. But they are a 20+ year old car, have been driven hard and need TLC. They forget that to bring it right back to pristine costs bulk moolah and the purchase price was just the starter.

You have made the right decision I believe to hang onto it and do it up.

When finished, you will have very nice car that isnt the same as all the other late models running around. But you will have spent only a fraction of what those guys have spent. Remember also the Starion is one tough built little car - it aint brittle.

To get the shits at times with a project like these is normal. Dont despair

Go for it.
Cheers
Greg
