I think I have an LDS that I didn't know of!!!!!!!!!

I had to move the rally (not finished) staz today, I have not driven it EVER and it is not tuned! But today it left 2 black lines in the driveway!!!???? Much to my surprise!!!!!!! Now I need to pull the back plate off the diff to double check!

Would be a bonus LSD if it is :D :D :D

Not always... my old GSR-V had an open diff, however with enough revs and the drop of a clutch and it would leave 2 marks.

Yeah that's true. Jack the rear off the ground and spin one wheel, if it spins the same direction it's a slippy, if it doesn't it's an open diff.
While it's in the air, you might see a sticker on the back of the diff indicating it's an LSD.
Still, that's far easier than getting all grubby and taking the back plate off.

Aren't the torque tubes on LSD's with LSD housings (rather then and LSD center in a non LSD housing) a different length?

^^ no the different length torque tubes are to match either the small or big housing LSDs. It just happens that most the small housing diffs are non-LSD while the big housing diffs are LSD.

From previous posts I've read I believe the GSR-V have a "Big" open diff and therefore have a different length torque tube to the small diff cars.
You'd still need to be able to identify the difference in length...who knows those numbers though.
There are other things to look for, like size of diff diameter, the shape of the bottom of it, etc, etc...
For this exercise who cares about all that technical crap, just jack its arse off the ground and the answer should reveal itself by spinning one wheel...

the GSR-Vs without the LSD have a small diff and a long torque tube. I have no idea why they got the small diff, it just seems silly to me.

Much to my surprise, all GSR-V's have small diffs whether LSD or not! The two I have atm are small!! One with LSD, one without.
The reason I reckon they are 'small' is because the model was 5 stud back in 1984/85 with the first batch that had 200ps.
The next batch and model facelift, most GSR-V's had a drop of power to 170ps. So, basically the same set up with the small diff, me thinks.

Because I had a late JB with a large diff housing LSD and a JD with a open diff with large diff housing, I originally assumed that in late 1985 and '86 on,
large diff housing were the norm.
But that was all proven wrong as my '87 GSR-V has a small LSD!

A couple of other points. Small LSD(7"/180mm) centres are now rarer than the large (8"/200mm)! And a quick check to see whether you have a small or large diff...
just measure the torque tube 17" torque tube = small diff, 16" torque tube = large diff!
Strength between the small vs large is another issue! :beer

Well I tried to jack up the back of the car........... My (not very old) Armstrong Trolly jack wouldn't lift the car :glare: :glare:
So after a shit load of bad words I used 2 standard jack and bugger me! All that effort and it's not an LSD

I was not getting under the car to measure the toque tube on those jacks!!!
So I'll sort that out later.

You mean that when you spun one wheel, the other wheel spun in the opposite direction?

If that's the case, it still doesn't rule out an LSD, it just rules out an LSD that's functioning properly.

Pull the back off it, it's probably due for an oil change anyway. Then you're absolutely sure.

Yes it did! That's true, But I need to replace my trolly jack first! I've got car stands, but the trolly jack is needed to get the height!
As for the backing plate, When I jack it up I'll be putting in my 4.6 LSD :D :D :D
I'll pull the backing plate off when it's out! Just to be sure :beer
