Where to stay in Melbourne?

Hey guys, heading to Melbourne on the 9th of Dec for a few days. Trying to find a cheap place near the city... although everywhere seems to be booked up on the 11th!?!?
Alternitivly anyone live near the city and have a spare room and bed? Could swing some cash your way...

Robin dont stay at the Grand Chancellor in town, its an absolute shithole! We had the displeasure of a week there in august and was a real downer on our trip!

I was looking at the backpackers on Elizabeth Street right down by the Vic markets on the other side of the road. It's only about $50 a night for a double room. Perfect for what I want, but they like all other places in the city are booked up for the 11th... :?
That's the place I stayed for a few nights when I moved to Melbourne a few years back and lived for a year.
