If it's a RWD then it will be a wide block and if it is a FWD OR AWD ( MOUNTED EAST-WEST ) then it will be a narrow block

No - RWD auto blocks can be narrow (except those with the mini torqueflite and import 4 speed auto)

Best bet is to get under the car and measure the distance between lower bellhousing bolts. Narrow is 310mm - wide 330mm (note measurements are approximate and off the top of my head - may be wrong)

ok , it seems I have a narrow block? 315mm ( car is a 87sigma auto) what are my manual trans options ? is it possible to get a 5 speed to bolt to this engine or only a 4 speed from a 2ltr sigma?

You can run a 2ltr jap 5 speed from a scorpion. Keep it auto and go twincam, then a vr4 or evo motor will match up to your box rofl

Ok thanks for the info. I am thinking, I want to get a 5speed, so when you say Jap 5spd this only from scorpians? Any ideas where I might find one for sale (Jap 5spd)? Any other cars one of these boxes can be got, maybe a wreckers in qld or northern nsw?
cheers

Get a jap 2l 5 speed. These came in various sigmas and scorpions and even the lancer hatches. If the box has a removable bellhousing it is a borg warner and you do not want. Get the one peice alloy jap box.

Best off buying a complete rusty 5 speed sigma to raid all the bits off (tailshaft, pedal box, crossmember etc.)
