I love old people

Because they do funny things. I was filling up the car this morning, glance over and see an old timer filling up his new Astra. He's watching the display and it's up to $19.20. On the ground in front of him and under the car is a growing pool of petrol. He squeezes the handle and obviously it shuts off cos the tank is full as a goog and the pool on the ground gets bigger. He's trying to get to $20 and does it 4 or 5 times before he realises that every bit of fuel he's putting in is going straight on the ground. And the person behind him has tooted him twice!! Then he grabs the windscreen washer thing, gives the car a quick squeegee and off he goes. Classic stuff.

Ive done my 2 years service in the Gas Station Army, seen this once, from another old timer, i thought it was very funny, he completly ignored it, hehe.

Ofcourse i have to cover all the petrol with sawdust, wait for a qhile then sweep it all up again... Spare a thought for the petrol station lackies of the world! hahaha ;)

Yes, what ProZac said..

we have to cover it, clean it up, block off the section, fill in a report 3 pages, fax it to 3 different people, organise to have the spill kit replenished, place the cleaning stuff in a special bag and ring up some environmental company to pick it up and dispose of it properly, all between serving and endless stream of customers..

at least that's how it is at my work.

Fuel pumps are damn easy, just put it as far in to the gas tank as you can, and pull, then shake 3 times (no more, or you're playing with it) and put it on the rack - wont even get a single drip outside the car.

Well its easier for guys.

We've been operating similar designs since we were 2

Years ago when I worked at a servo I watched a lady check her oil on the dipstick, go and get a large bottle of oil and try ever so carefully to pour the oil down the dipstick hole. I was alerted to her dilema by the growing pool of oil on the petrol station forecourt. I suppose it was logical (this is where I check the oil, there must be oil down there so that must be where the oil goes)

i filled in for a mate for 1 week a year or so ago and some old guy came in in a landrover, filled up and payed then poped the bonnet and just took the radiator cap off. i found the lack of steam, screaming and smell of cooking old bloke kinda weird. he then filled the radiator up with water put the cap back on and closed the bonnet. by the time he was back in the car and moveing the engine had lost all the water on the floor and was down to a drip. i mentiond this to my friend and he told me the guy did it every day for the last 6 months. my friend had tried to explane to him the engine was suposed to hold the water but the guy said it was a slow leak and as long as he filled it up every day it never overheated. hmmm, 4 liters goes in, 3.9L comes back out. ahhh well, not my car.

i've heard lots of stories of people filling up their water via the oil filler cap, that's a classic.

Just today some guy put diesel in his daihatsu charade.
Plenty of people try and put super in their unleaded cars.

the amount of people that just stand there trying to fill their car with a pump that his a huge ourt of order sign on it right in front of their face staggers me.

Plenty of people try and jump start their cars in the middle of the forecourt. I hear sparks and petrol vapour make a nice combo.

You're exposed to a lot of stupid people in a job like that, and when it's combined with flammable substances such as petrol and gas, it can be quite scary.

Friend of mine had a guy filling up his car with a lit cigarette in the same hand that was holding the pump...

My gassie was on a corner, with lights, so many people would try to beat the lights by racing throught the forecourt. Best one was a red lancer, came racing through doing about 70 when there were kids on the forecourt. He came back later on, i waited till he was in the shop and had paid then went right off at him infront of all the customers... ahhh, much fun.

Mobil on K road/Ponsonby Rd intersection

Gf was on a Ponsonby bus, instead of slowing down for the lights and turning left, it went through the forecourt at 50KPH, bellying the bus as it hit K Rd. She got to her destination on time tho.
