by the sounds of it, these sony cd's install the software without you knowing it. No "do you wish to install...blah blah" crap, no "by installing X software you agree to...blah blah Do you agree? Yes No" It just does it when you play your music on the pc.

Ide say there wouldnt be an "i agree" - it is a music cd afterall. Check the actual booklet that comes with the CD. It will be in there somewhere, I am sure of it.
Whoever made the comment about sony's rootkit being used to conceal online cheating, only the very most amateurish of cheaters would use rootkits to conceal their hacks. Let's face it, cheats for games such as Halflife have been around for so long there are better ways of concealing things. Besides this, valve (creator of halflife) are no longer legally allowed to view all active processes to verify what is or is not running on a persons PC for legality reasons, so a rootkit would not help here.
