Nice coincidence there - two of the 80s rare rwd turbo Jap cars. Starion and Piazza.

?????????????????????

Since when has a stock Starion run 20 PSI???

I always thought above 14 PSI equaled blown engine unless you have forgies.

And what about the ECU surely the stock ECU was never capable of 20psi??

STOCK

Post by JD_Stazza_Brendan »

I thought the fatory fuel pump couldnt handle anything over 15psi, And the ECU doesnt map over 15psi..FCD doesnt map for more fuel.
Wouldnt this run lean if it was STOCK.

13.9 is impressive, but at 20psi standard internals it wont last long.

The amount of boost you can run on a stock engine varies . One of the variables which can help one stock engine run higher boost than another is the folw rate of the stock injectors.
The biggest enemy of a stock motor is detonation . If you can supply the fuel either by way of more volume and to a lesser extent higher octane fuel eg BP 100 a stock motor will be able to handle a little more than 1 bar of boost . Though this will depend on application i.e street or track (where the heat loads are higher and periods of sustained boost are longer).
The stock mitsubishi head gasket is a quality product and will take some punishment. You are more likely to break a ringland on the piston than blow a head gasket if you run too much boost an detonate.

To put those in doubt out of their misery and for those being anal about the definition of "Stock" or "Standard" , I will shed some light . The orange Starion IS running 20psi and it does have a VL Commodore fuel pump (wow) and standard (non forged) VR4 pistons . Oh and a fuel cut defender (wow again) .Other than that , it has the STOCK computer , STOCK Turbo, STOCK Injection , STOCK Ignition , a STOCK (and very 2nd hand) JD intercooler , STOCK Engine internals etc. etc. To anyone who tunes engines this is for all intents and purposes a STOCK setup . This is what EVO JB meant when he said stock . OF COURSE it has some mods . The reason this car is relatively quick is PROPER TUNING . The secret to power AND reliability in Mitsubishi Engines is not throwing as much money at it as you can , but KNOWING WHAT YOU ARE DOING. In the case of this car , I advised Dave what would work from a combination of hints from Ralliart and LOTS and LOTS of trial and error (and a few new swear words invented along the way). Dave also really knows what he's doing when it comes to Turbocharged Cars and is quickly getting good with Starions .

Even boost means Stock Starion running more boost.

But the car is quite good. Blows slight bit of smoke but still is good.

Who gives a rats if it is stock or not. It is close enough to being factory stock and runs 13.9 with the STOCK ECU and ECI ( not many around here can do better). That in itself is an excellent achievement, not to mention that most others have to do a shitload of work to get into the 14s.
