Anyways, I am curious to see if there is any interest in this, I would like to do this on the side to fund my engine swap. We also have a local internation port Portland, Oregon usa Port of Portland.

so far there's a bit of negativity going on, but seriously how much will the car cost, landed in Aus dollars, for one I woudn't mind having a LHD starion/conquest, it could be a cheap track car...

At the current costs of Starions direct from Japan, the option for one from the US is very appealing, and yes there may be the headache of the RHD conversion but in my very honest opinion, this headache along with compliance would not come close to the headache involved in fitting widebody panels, especially the rears and then changing over the complete suspension set-up to the US gear not to forget the no-leather interior or the later model interior design..........and the fact that technically, the extra track width and suspension modifications makes the car Un-roadworthy requiring an Engineer's over-sight Certificate which is generally a min of $600 ranging to $2K depending on their mood........another unforseen cost

A lot of the people commenting here should really do all the sums before and think in terms of the bigger picture, just to make sure you all get the idea, okay just for rear quarter panels, to be cut out completely and have the widebody ones fitted, rather than cut the excess bulge from the US rear panel and just weld it onto the Starion rear I would expect at mates rates, to pay $1500 with them expecting you to give them a hand at it, this would probably be cut down to $600 by taking the obvious shortcut but not a cheap excersice nevertheless.

Then from my current experience with Insurance companies, you could name the value of you car if it was a rare Import, where as with the Starion, no number of modifications is going to raise the value to as much as a genuine Widebody which means a JD Starion car can be economically written-off for about $2500 tops worth of damage rather than $8000 for the alternative, and believe me, I would rather receive a cheque for $7000 than $1500 ($1000 value for Starion wreck) to keep the Starion and fix it myself

Another note, I am pretty sure the holes are already drilled in the passenger side frame for a steering box.

Has anyone there actually imported a LHD and converted it to RHD?

yes starion4me has done it. Plus I purchased a previously imported car that had been converted. In doing a lot of little tidy up things to this car became aware of all the issues.

starion4me's conversion web site
http://www.starion.webhop.net/

You have to weld in the steering column support member plus the upper mount for the clutch pedal box.
We did not have climate control so all Oz heater stuff must be used. There are no studs to hold up the RHD heater they have to welded in. The fresh air vent in the panel below the windscreen wipers has to be changed to the other side, this is a BIG job. I guess you don't have to do this but then you have no fresh air setting for the heater.
There are other things don't have time to list now. Check the web site.

I think if you can offer a import service that's good but it is a lot of work to do the conversion properly.

I agree, a RHD conversion is not a job for the faint hearted and you must be seriously committed if you wish to purchase a LHD over a RHD varient but in saying that, the conversion of an Aus-spec Starion over to the widebody configuration would be just as difficult but a lot more time consuming.

No argument from me. All I am saying is that the price difference US LHD widey vs Japan RHD widey is personally not enough to warrant going to the expense and pain of the steering conversion. I'd rather spend the extra and get a factory RHD car.

I seem to recall you talking about importing Starions from Japan for $5K landed. Why haven't we been inundated?

I figure racing my be the best option for importing one from america then.

What kind of taxes do you guys get hit for, if you are importing a car for track use?
