I would like to install a bunch of cameras around the place after all the thefts. Does anyone know anything about these products? We need about 4 cameras at least. We already have 1 but that is just not enought.
Im happy to buy from ebay or even buy another computer if we need too. We have 3 computers here but im not sure if that will help at all? They have to run 24 hrs and be able to record continually also.

i just got a job workin in the CCTV sector. my boss has some stand alone dvr's that he might wana get rid of cheaply. normally $1k but ill see what he will do em for. as for the cameras just take a pic with a digi cam n let me know what the lighting is like n ill see wat u need. as for recording it will record on motion detection and depends on the size of the hard drive how long it store the footage. i should be coming down to melb next week for a job so just drop me an email. ill pm u my details.

Thanks guys..i need full exterior coverage around the property and also want it extended to the rear public car park. Its all out door and it has to work day and night. It also has to be removable when i leave this property. Cameras recording with motion is a good thing, but i want them runing all the time, only recording with motion..perhaps after hours recording.

I use a software based DVR called i-catcher console it's not that cheap but still cheaper than buying a standalone DVR if you already have a decent computer to run it on. There is also a good open source (free) software DVR called Zonealarm but that only runs on Linux. The advantage of a software DVR is it has a much greater range of customization, it can be configured to alert you by email/sms/website when there is motion detected on a particular camera, it has a huge range of parameters that can be adjusted in its motion detection and the cameras can be configured to only record at certain times. One of the most important features you should consider is storing a copy of the saved images off site as they're recorded. It's no use to you if your place is broken into and they steal your computer/DVR. For this you'll need a good reliable broadband connection at both ends, or another option is to have the system inaccessible on site, say in the attic or a hidden room and then access it by remote desktop or something similar. You'll also want to consider running a UPS on your entire system, computer/DVR, all cameras, and router/modem if applicable. Again your system becomes useless without one if someone shuts off the power before breaking in.

As far as cameras go eBay would be a great place to have a look. I've never even considered buying new because good second hand ones can be bought for around 1/4 the price of new, but if your budget allows then you could save a lot of time by buying new. Jaycar have a wide range of surveillance products and are worth checking out. Almost all cameras come standard with night vision via infra-red L.E.D.s these days so darkness shouldn't be a problem. The range is usually about 15 m but can be extended with infra-red spotlights.

flav i can do your cabling and hookup for once you decide on which brand/combination you want.

There is a good one with 4cameras and harddrive that takes once still shot a second and records for up to 4 weeks. These are good because usually you don't need 16 - 20fps instead one good quality shoot per second 'cos you can use your computer to zoom and get much finer details even facial scars and tats. They are $2000 fully installed.
