Ferrari's (this ones for you Flav)

Post by Rainey »

Last week us Tasmanian's were lucky enough to see some of the Ferrari Club Australia members visit our state and show off their cars. I was very fortunate to take Thursday and Friday off work specifically to capture these guys at their best when they arrived in Hobart. There were around 35-40 odd exotic cars making the trip over on the boat with models ranging from the Lamborghini Gallardo, Aston Martin DB9 and DB4, a Maserati, though to Ferrari models such as the 430, 360, 355, 348, 328, 308, 550, 575 and some classics like the Testarossa and the Mondial thrown in for good measure.

I was doing some photography for their club, see below:

If that wasn't enough I happened to speak to a couple of proud owners who encouraged me to join them at the Police Academy Driver Training motokhana the following day (Friday) and take some more photos if I so desired (you betcha!). So with the inside information under my belt I prepared myself for a big day and like a little kid in a candy store I was there with bells on.

Everyone appeared to be having a ball out there on the pan, plenty of laughs and trash talking from the hill, hehehe. Despite the cliche that exotic car owners tend to carry, I couldn't believe how welcome I was made to feel as a spectator/photographer, they really were a lovely and approachable bunch of people. I hope they had a fantastic stay in Tasmania and thank god the weather was beautiful, I think I even got a tan!

It was a dream come true for me to witness these million dollar vehicles being driven with enthusiasm but the icing on the cake came when one of the owners approached me and offered to take me for a run in his car in exchange for a copy of the photographs, it was such a hard decision (yeah right!) but after much thought (half a millisecond) hell yeah I agreed. At that stage I didn't know what car he drove so I asked him which one it was to make sure I got plenty of good shots of his car, "27, I'm the one making all the blue smoke!" he grinned. Oh my god this guy drives the only 575 Maranello there and he wanted to take me for a ride in it!? This guy tried to organise a dry run around the motokhana circuit for me but sadly they said it wasn't a good idea because of insurance reasons, instead he said he would take me for a blast up the highway into Rokeby and back again.

Impressions??? Well the car is blisteringly quick, its no wonder it was one of the fastest street legal cars in the world a couple of years ago. The power application is silky smooth, a short jab of the throttle and your pulled back into the headrest but it's not rough and punchy its just buttery perfection. He stuck the car into 6th gear at about 60km/h to demonstrate how much usable torque it still had from only 1,500 RPM, simply amazing! I was grinning, ear to ear... and still am.

My mum's boss has a Maranello, he took me for a ride in it a few months back. Farken awesome car, as you said Rainey, there's torque whenever you want it, and the thing feels like it's on rails too.

I'd still rather have my widey though
