The link I posted is on a website dedicated to urban myths. It also says on the second line that the status of it is undetermined (ie unable to verify if it was true or false.)

I think Taks and Davids explanations are equally plausible. Perhaps a letter should be drafted to Mitsubishi (Japan, Aus, US?) asking if they have a definitive answer. Or track down and tie down the cheif executive of Mitsubishi Japan at the time and say we'll tickle him and won't stop until he tells the truth!! :D

When i get shit about the name, about 78% of the time the shit-giver drives a Commodore. A Commodore. What the feck is a Comm oh door I ask them. At this point I generally rest my case. If they persue the issue, I arange a meeting at the nearest set of traffic lights :D

com·mo·dore ( P ) Pronunciation Key (km-dôr, -dr)
n.

Abbr. Com. A commissioned rank formerly used in the U.S. Navy that was above captain and below rear admiral. Abolished in 1899, it was restored temporarily during World War II.

One who holds this rank.

Used as an unofficial designation for a captain in the British Navy temporarily in command of a fleet division or squadron.

The senior captain of a naval squadron or merchant fleet.
The presiding officer of a yacht club.
Well there we go, a named based on the naval service. Who here agrees this deprives them of the right to pick shit at any other vechiles name? *raises hand*

No offence intended on any Navi serving staff. Please don't put sump up my rump.
