The only way to get a diff....?
The only way to get a diff....?
Ok, it seems that buying a Starion diff (LSD) is next to impossible.
My question for you guys is, if I were to buy a cheapo Starion, swap the LSD for my open diff, then attempt to part it out, how will I fare as far as costs go?
This one caught my attention and gave me the idea, but I really don't know what the car is worth - the LSD is only part I need.

my parts car cost me 1100 (rip off, but the guy lied through his teeth about a lot of stuff, including it having an lsd.. i did not know how to confirm this at that stage)
so far, sold tail lights, some small interior parts, rear bumper, one of the front quarters, the front grille, intake, exhaust mani and turbo.. and i think that added up to about 300 in total.
Things it still has that are scavengeable (some i will keep, others will be sold):
fuel pump (walbro 160L/h unit)
aftermarket oxy sensor
straight through exhaust with aftermarket dump pipe (biut a crappy restrcitive muffler and no resonator for some reason)
power steering stuff
engine block
non-jetvalve head
torque tube and open diff
front suspension
front vented bonnet
rear hatch
door and rear quarter glass
mirrors
roof lining
dashboard
i'm sure there's something i've missed
So.. still a fair bit can be made back if i bother to take all this stuff off the car and sell it.. or i can have a lot of rare spares.
in your case, either.. part it and post up the parts for sale - feasible option if you have the space to have the car or parts lying around while you wait for people to buy, and the time or patience to take the shit off
or.. swap out the diffs and sell the donor off cheap if you have less time/ space and more money

oh yeah, i also still have the headlights, and the radiator was in better condition than mine, so that got swapped.
it also had an intercooler at the time, which i have still - pipework was an attempt at the guiness book of world records for tiny diameter piping that could go around the world, so that was thrown away

yes it should, everyone wants them and no one wants to sell them! BY FAR the easiest and CHEAPEST way is to get one from the states. airbats (shaun) is trustworthy. you wont find a decent LSD here for less than $700. usually closer to a grand.Lummy wrote:Hmmmm, thanks for your reply.
I do have the space for either option, but preferably I would just swap the diffs over and re-sell it as that's the least amount of hassle.
I'll keep an eye out for a good deal.
It really shouldn't be this hard to get an LSD!!
Cheers.
Fibreglass airdams $370, fibreglass front bumpers $260, reco drag links $165, alloy radiators $925 (unpolished), h/l switch rebuilds $125, all plus freight.

Lummy,
See if you can get a look at a evo 1-3 lsd diff. I have a feeling the lsd part will be very similar. They do come in a mechanical too. I started doing some research on it, but just havn't had time to go and inspect one yet.
Other option is Yahoo Japan, as they sell a Cusco lsd centre for a EX Lancer, which is the same diff as a non irs Scorp 10 bolt diff. I know your irs, but here me out. Scorp guys steal our small lsd to put into there diffs so it should work vice versa.

cusco lsd.. drool.. how much do they go for?
also i remember someone on here mentioning that the evo diffs are not as strong due to them not usually needing to handle 'all' of the engine's torque.. would this be true?

Ive seen inside a EVO2 Diff. 3.909 gears (same as JD diff ratio) and it all looked similar to the Starion diff. But i guess it only needs to be out by a tiny bit to be useless. A guy i know was going to try put it in a Starion one day. I dont think he has done it yet.
-JA Starion with JD bits , Forged engine, Heaps of mods (parked up)
-BFII XR6 Turbo Ute , Here comes 400hp for 2k :p
-77 Mazda 323 drag car. 13bt rotary project.
Yes i have too many toys.

Yeah, shaun is trust worthy, but he's mega gay!! LMAO...
You need a four bolt diff eh?? I've shipped over there before, and found a company that will do air mail shipping for $365 or so through FedEx. That's $200 off regular price.
Add in the cost of the diff, $250 or so and if you want it, I can get it for you. BTW, you will need a torque tube, which is included in my estimates. I have a 4 bolt diff and torque tube that I have a line on, and am willing to ship. Let me know.
