Peltier?

Post by flav »

OK...Im building a computer that i hope will be the forefront of home systems! Im looking for a peltier (cooler/heater) that will be good enough to cool the quad core cpu. I need around 300-400w. Anyone know where i can get one?

Go buy a cheap 12v car fridge and pull the peltier out of that!

Jaycar used to sell them (I'm not sure if they still do).

If you get a few crappy peltiers you can daisy chain them (some optical telescopes apparently use this system).

I have the water cooling system already and wanted to piggy back it onto the peltier. Jaycar has them but they are small. I might need to think about this abit more as there seems to be corrosion issues with the peltier...but if you know anyone using it, and it works, let me know.

You won't be able to get a peltier large enough. Plus, you still have to move the heat. Assuming you find a 400W peltier, you'll need about 600W to run it then you have to remove 1000W from the system somewhere.

I can see issues already, with some work i think it can be sorted. The case its in is a server unit so there is plenty of room but im leaning towards modifications to the water unit with the compressor from a fridge in there!

this was a long time ago but from memory i had two big peltiers(cant remember rating on them), ford falcon radiator, with electric fan and shroud hanging out the window, i used a big water block to cool the peltiers, with a couple of regular heatsinks bolted to it for good measure.

abit Bf6 motherboard, waterproofed with wax, (that was a fucking great mobo)

startup was interesting, power up the outside radiator pump & fan, wait for temp to stabilise, power up water pump from resevoir, and the waterblock heatsinks and fans.

actually powering up the computer required an assistant, someone to flick switch on peltiers about a second before board was powered up, and then to hit delete to pause the POST and go into bios until temp on cpu was stable, while i monitored the temps on the ram, which only had a small waterblock for cooling.

front side bus was 144(648) and 172 at 774. i used to regularly run at about 684-702mhz depending on outside temperature.

temps were -18 at idle, and between -14 and -8 normal running.

i used a laptop for my actual computer usage, the other system was just a hobby for running benchmarks etc.

edit: processor ran at 5.75 volts and ram was about 25% increased voltage
