hmmm gearbox is rooted,

i think my gearbox is f&#%ed.
ive noticed a bit of noise coming from the gearbox for a little now. sort of like a ticking/ rattley type noise even in neutral with the clutch let out.
but when i was driving to uni this morning i went to put the car into 3rd (driving normal not boosting at all) it crunched on the way in (does this sometimes) and then once in gear it was making a really bad noise. sounded like there were ball bearings loose in there. put it in too 4th and it was sweet tried 3rd again and its rooted.
i think i am up for a new gearbox, the current set up is the sigma box with starion internals. i am deciding whether to get this rebuilt or if i should get a supra gearbox. any ideas on how much these two options would cost.
i don't really want to spend much more than a grand but i will if i have to. i want the gearbox to last so what should i do..

Have you converted the sigma box to hydraulic clutch or converted the starion to cable clutch?

The only way currently to get a supra box into your car is to use a CRS adapter plate. These use the 2L borg warner bellhousing out of a GH/J sigma & you will need to ship the bellhousing to them for machining.
-CRS plate & machining
-Clutch plate to suit Sura
-Custom crossmember
-modify tailshaft
-supra g/box in reasonable condition (easier said than done nowadays)
-correct shifter extension to suit staz
-Convert cable bellhousing to hydro.
As you can see it all adds up. The upgrade offers questionable gains over a Starion box for a heap more cash.
Do you think you can rebuild the current box yourself?

I'd be checking other things first b4 jumping to a new box. Are all the box/engine bolts tight? Problem getting into first? Does it make the noise with the clutch in? Thrust bearing may also be shagged.

yeah ill check the bolts and change the gear oil. but i don't have any problems getting it into first. nah i don't think it makes the noise with the clutch in..

Bite the bullet, remove the bottom cover on the G/Box( NB, remove oil 1st!!! rofl ) have a look at the internals, but it sounds like yr syncro hub has shit itself, will post pic later.... :beer
Rebuilding G/Box is tricky, mainly the 5th gear as it sits in the rear housing & is a press fit on the output shaft, U will require a long puller, but after that ist's straight 4ward

my mate reckons its a smashed 3rd gear or stripped teeth. I got a couple of friends who are mechanics so they could probably help me rebuild it. but i have never done a gearbox before, not sure about my mates. how hard is it?
yeah ill try and pull it apart this arvo.

pulled the bottom plate off. 2 teeth smashed off third gear. so im am trying to get a supra box, advanced jap said they have adapter kits for 350 which make the box bolt up. and i think i can get a tail shaft made for 400. so i just want to find a box.

Lots of info here. You can also use the 88-90 Starion gearbox they are very strong.

Those boxe's came with the last Starion WB's (88-90). They can hold much power, however with my twincam it can not hold the high rpm's. The synchro's don't like high rpm's. Shifting can be difficult sometime's.
