Brakes

Post by CaptainShiner »

Just wondering if anyone has done any upgrades to their brakes, ie larger calipers, better discs etc, and where they effective?

Yep. NSX 282mm discs with Wilwood Dynalite 4-spot calipers on the front.

Yes very effective but a larger master cylinder is required for a stiffer pedal... which is still be investigated.

Cookie, did you convert to 5 stud, or is the NSX 4 stud, or did you have the rotors re-drilled? What made you decide to go with NSX rotors?

The reason an NSX rotor was used was because it has the same hat height as a starion rotor. The NSX rotor is slightly thicker though 28mm.

The NSX rotors were re-drilled to 4 stud. The centre hole was machined out to accept a Starion hub.

We have made up some mounting plates to mount the wilwood calipers. The mounting plates bolt straight up to the starion struts. No drilling required. The only thing you have to do is remove the starion dust shield.

Then it all bolts on and fits under a 15" rim. Standard Starion wheel offset and bolt pattern is retained.

I did a bit of research

Post by tmz_99 »

I did a bit of research for a brake conversion (Still a while off) and DBA is happy to supply "blank" discs, which you can have drilled to suit whatever car.....

I'm looking @ R33 skyline brakes (discs + calipers) but I dont think they would fit neatly under the 15's like cookies..

DBA do not supply blanks of all discs. At the time they would not supply the NSX disc as a blank. Re-drilling is not a problem though.

However if you can get whatever disc you want to use as a blank then that would be the preferable way to go.

go volvo!

Post by scum »

volvo cast iron 4spot will fit onto the front of a staz with only a small adaptor plate. disk is the same size so u dont need to change it. but std rims will not fit over them. these brakes coft about $50 and a kit to repair them is about $50. they dont look cool. but they work well, and they have a backup brake line in them (so you can do cool burnouts with a hydraulic handbrake setup on the front wheels :D )
I figured out the meaning of life, and since then every day just gets worse.

Warranty void if stupid.

Here's a couple of pics of the brakes and how they just fit under a 15" rim.

Cookie, that would be a perfect first acticle in the technical section, as none of the parts are very obscure, just expensive! Looks like a fair bit of research went into that, its officialy the "good shit". Care to release any diagrams/measurments for the adaptors?

I made a rough adapter plate myself at home to initially fit the calipers. Then Davidh (Skyquest) came over and took some measurement and came up with a technical drawing to get some adapter plates professional made.

The professionally made adapter plates are now on the car. Im sure he wouldn't mind me posting the pic so here it is:

I must stress that this or any other brake conversion should be engineer approved to be legal on public roads.

No problems. Also, you WILL need a larger master cylinder to get a solid brake pedal back. An appropriate master cylinder is currently under investigation.

The Starion master cylinder is a 15/16" bore. A master cylinder with a 1 1/16" bore should do the job nicely.

Cookie,
Can you confirm that standard JB/D 15"s will fit?
I know they didn't with mine using the same disc & Commode twin pots.

I don't have a JB/JD 15" rim to check with. If someone could measure the inside diameter of the rim then I can work if it will fit.
