Is Chopping Springs Really THAT bad?

Is chopping your springs THAT bad? I know a few guys who have done it to their commodores and other cars and they have never had a problem,
Has anyone here chopped their springs?

No, it's not bad. Unless you go over a bump and the spring falls off it's seat and jams in the wheel/suspension/wheel arch.

Springs are relatively cheap, buy lowered ones.

If you cut ur springs you really are asking for trouble in more ways than one. It is dangerous to you driving the car, other people on the road and street and may end up causing damage to ur pride and joy. There are heaps of pics on the net of cars that have crashed due to cut springs, and if u happen to kill someone else in the process well thats such a waste of a life over something u could do properly for a few hundered dollars.
People that do this deserve to be caught and fined because they put so many peoples lives in jeopardy, theres just no excuse for it when u can get spring kits so cheap.
My 2c on something i feel quite strongly about!!!

Agree - I once bought a Starion that had chopped springs - it was the first thing I replaced. You would not believe how badly it bounced over small bumps etc.

Proper springs are cheap :)

especially for dunnydore owners rofl
do yaself a favour and get proper lower springs
its better for ya health and others

Cut springs are an instant invitation to the pits. A friend of mine had cut springs and a welded diff in his Gemini (geminwhydidibuyit), on a Thursday night cruise it was his turn to be scrutinised by the cops. He thought he got away will bald tires and a 1 point $70 fine until he the cops heard his inside tyre chirping as he reverse out. From there it was on a tow truck to the pits were he coped another 1800 worth of fines and had the car taken off the road. Last time I spoke to him he is having fun riding his pushy around and bumming lifts after losing his licence for 6 months....

If you were to have an accident and seriously hurt or kill someone expect to be facing massive fines or imprisonment not to mention getting sued.

And don't think insurance will cover you either. Illegal mods void your insurance...

Lower front and rear springs are cheaper than this ^^^^^ and the car will handle better.......... that’s my 2c worth...

just stick with some new springs for now, order some from your local suspension place if you wanna do it yourself, no harder then cutting.

The requirement for spring is to remain captive when the shocker/suspension is fully extended. A proper lowered spring will generally do this. If you get springs which are shorter you will ned to have the top of the shocker shaft machined shorter and rethreaded, so the spring will not fall out when extended. Not very expensive, but a pain to do. Also, once shortened you can't let the shock fully retract or you'll never get the shaft back out.

Chopped springs are fully sik mate, but why not take out the springs all together and ride on your bump stops and be the envy of all your friends.

Or you could buy lowered springs like the others sugguested. Most of the lowered springs (ie king spring lowered springs) are designed to work with standard shocks and still remain captive at full extension. But if your shocks are worn out, the new springs might end up being a mismatch with the shocks.
