Airbox Leaking Oil!?

Post by oped »

Lately my starion has been leaking oil after a drive... I inspected it came from the area near the airbox...

But today I decided to open the airbox to find it covered in oil!? WTF?

Its drinking oil like VB's (takes a few big gulps then pisses it all out 20mins later)

Has this happened to anyone else?

the engine has already been rebuilt approx 1000kms ago...

Ive been told that it may be a blocked hose from the oil catch can to the sump

I had exactly the same problem, crankcase pressure forcing oil into catch can, then it overflows into the airbox. I cleaned the PVC valve/ catch can and airbox and got another year out of the motor before it started doing it again. Be careful as any oil coming out of the airbox will get all over your drivers side tires and you could get some unexpected drift action happening especially in the wet.

PVC valve screws into the front of the rocker cover, should only flow air one way, unscrew it and soak it in kero or degreaser and test it. spray degreaser into the catch can with it removed, drain it well. This could help but you may want to try revving the motor while warm with the oil cap off and see how much blowby you've got or do a compression test to find the problem. Could be due to incorrect run in -glazed bores or broken ring lands both big dollar problems.

Also make sure the drain line isn't blocked for some reason.

I feel for you mate; I had these exact symptons about 3 months ago and it turned out to be broken ring lands on piston number 2 :x
A compression test will quickly identify this kind of problem.
I wish you luck that it's not the same problem, but....

Rings are shot mate! I'd be bringing it back to whoever "rebuilt" it and demanding satisfaction! Mine was leaking oil in the same place and everthing was gone in mine, including two broken pistons! Bastard still drove though...

shit yeh i hope it isn't the rings....
If the rings are broken how come the oil flows from the catch can out into the airbox?
Why wouldn't the oil just go from the catch can to the sump even if its broken?
Thats why I believe it may be the oil line is blocked...
Well hopefully I find out tomorrow.. Because I cant really drive it when its not holding its oil

Because combustion is leaking past the broken rings and pressurizing the sump. Just do a compression test - that will tell you what condition the rings are in.
