Brake pads shelf life

Post by jrod82 »

Do brake pads expire? I had this old set lying around, and there is a number printed on the label that could be a date, and this was certainly not the purchase date, is it an expiry date?

Brake pads are made out of the same resins as bakelite, as in, it'll out-last your teeth, and probably your ears... To be on the safe side, drive the car around the block a few times before relying on them, but you should do that anyway with new brakes.

Its probably the manufactured date, i doubt pads will ever go off, at worst if they use organic material to bond the pads it may aborb water or other fluids if you didnt keep them well packed.

gday jrod,
im not 100% sure if brake material actually expires but do you know if they are abstestos based pads or not??, abstestos seems to have a good shelf life but as we know not the healthiest stuff to work with,

id say go for it, use them but check for glazing or heat cracks after 1000-2000 k's
