i know the difference between narrow and wide blocks (330mm vs 310mm), but is it possible to just swap the crankcase to convert a narrow block to a wide block and vice versa? has anyone even tried this?

I don't know what you mean by crankcase.

The bellhousing is one-piece with the gearbox body if this is what you are asking. They complete body & housing can be swapped, but there is a fair bit of stuffing around, not least the hydraulic/cable clutch changes.

crank case = part that bolts up to the bottom of the block to hold the crank in place

or you could redrill the block I run a 4g54 with both patterns
if I run out of narrow blocks I would drill a wide block
as I dont like to use the large flywheel

just a thought
