Adjustable top strut mounts

Post by sigmaproject »

Anybody using adjustable top strut mounts on a lowered car. Wondering if they make a difference in the steer/ handle department. When I got my last wheel align after lowering my car, the operator of the equipment didnt tell me how the car was as far as alignment goes, but I would imagine that the caster would be way off. Being able to adjust it back to optimum would probably be a good thing??? :o

Yes however the Starion is one of a few cars that has LOTS of caster adjustment available. No need to modify anything. Caster will affect "turn in" and high speed stability.
And yes correct adjustment will have a BIG affect on handling. For general club motorsport use I would recommend 1.5-2.0 degrees negative camber and 5 degrees caster.

Anyhow these numbers work really well on a Starion, may not suit a Sigma. You should really ask the guy what he has set it to because if it feels good you know what to ask for next time!

hope this helps.

Adjustments

Post by sigmaproject »

Hey thanks for the reply. My Sigma has Starion front struts so maybe he got it right. My car does not have good straight line stability and feels weird (technical term) when moving from straight ahead, as when pulling out to overtake. It sort of moves further across the road than intended and you have to catch it and pull it back in line. Terrible understeer in slow corners.

That sounds like the effect of not enough castor to me? But im very very vague on suspension geometry...

If your not happy take it back to him. Your "toe in" could be wrong.

Now you know why I laugh at those lowered Honda's "on the deck". Most of them would not handle for shit. :beer

mounts

I fitted the Starion struts , but used the Sigma top mounts which have no adjustment whatsoever. Was looking thru an old K-Mac catalog and they made an adjustable top mount for every Mitsubishi except fot the Starion. The factory must have made an effort to give the Starion a wider range of adjustments

I've just picked up a set of adjustable strut tops (not K-mac), I'll let you know how they go once I fit the strut tops and get it aligned.
