See if there is any power to the connections with a multimeter before you worry about sanding...

Try bending the contacts out a bit so they make better contact.

Gah I've had the same problem with both of my Cordia's, except that my rear wiper still works. I think you can just rotate the flat contact bits so that the spiked bit is in contact with a fresh bit of metal.

I checked the demister wire in a few places with a multimeter, as far as I could tell the problem is somewhere between the switch and the start of the wire that runs to the boot, so probably the relay, wherever that is, or a problem with the wire under the dash.

As far as i can remember there is also a small screw that allows you to move the contacts a bit on the strut on the hatch side

Make sure the contacts actually move into the strut, mine were just barely touching, after adjusting (moving the contacts on the hatch side a bit down)
and a bit of sanding the contacts both my wiper & demister worked great again.

I'm in the same boat! My wiper works (After I found a cut wire on the gas strut) but the demister is stuffed, won't even turn the light on! If light does come on, demister will work!!! :?
