starion being an arsehole...help

sorry but thats the best explanation of whats going on with my car. after painstakingly reassembling the throttlebody complete with new homemade gaskets, the car drove perfectly fine, i stopped it at a mates place, but when i went to back out of the driveway it kept stalling, like 5 or 6 times. has no problems with me driving fowards, just reversing, it immediately stalls. if i rev it up to 3 or 4 thousand in reverse and ride the clutch out, it'll still stall :s
also, half the time whenever i change gears the car will suddenly lose power.. tends to be only when i'm changing up. it comes in groups... the car will run sweet as for 5 minutes, then will keep hiccuping for another 5... any idea what might be wrong? bloody car.

If its getting the better of you (i was ready to attack my car) it might pay to get it sorted by a pro. I did & im starting to regain my sanity.

noone ever seems to be able to work out the problems though, mechanics tell me to go to an auto electrician and the sparkies tell me to go see a mechanic :s
also while i'm on the topic of starions being arseholes, my oil pressure gauge was sitting at about 15%, i thought hmm must be running low, topped up and it was still sitting at around the same level. checked the oil and there was heeeaps in there, when i drove it later the oil pressure was at about half, but then later again it dropped right back down again. these readings were both taken at about 1/4 throttle. is my gauge busted?

You've checked all your oil pipes? and the bits coming from the back of the guage you might have a vacuum leak or somthing that stops it from reporting correctly. I am no mechanic but i like to do things myself too. if your local area mech are saying that then go somewhere else maybe travel to bathurst or somewhere where the mechanics used to race/rally them, seems to be all too many in Bathurst. :P
fuel or ignition?

See if you can determine if its a fuel problem or an ignition problem causing it to stall. Try hooking up a fuel pressure gauge (even if temporarily) and watch it when its playing up. Seeing as it only happens when in reverse with load applied, or when decelerating between gear changes, it sounds like a fuel pickup problem. Check the tank pickup and your fuel filters. What happens if you've got it going in reverse, like rolling on a flat bit of road at idle speed, then give it some throttle? Does it stall then?
Start measuring and testing things to narrow it down. Best of luck - these problems are sometimes tricky to sort out.
Sounds kinda like the TPS.

That's the small black box that goes onto the throttle body and measures
the angle of the butterfly.
Sounds faulty. Perhaps fuel is leaking into it?
Anyway, you're description isn't sufficient, but it's worth looking at.

David

its an 86 right? theres a procedure for re-setting the TPS on those, helped out my 85 heaps when it had lots of little random problems. Ill go get the url.

ok solved a few problems: oil pressure problem was caused by fuel bypassing the piston rings (due to another problem i had with leaking injectors) and entering the oil, causing the pressure to drop but the amount of liquid on the dipstick to stay the same. have drained and replaced the oil, the car doesnt seem to have suffered.
as for the crazy losses of power, i have a cut open gearbox and i've discovered that tapping on the airfilter makes the car die. so i suppose my intercooler piping is knocking a loose connection in the AFM. will replace and see what happens. i unplugged the AFM and the car ran fine after that (although the ecu wouldnt let it boost. not that i tried.)

Just read your other post, about having the injectors around the wrong way... on Dash engine, the injectors are staged, the smaller primary one goes until about 3000rpm, then the HUGE secondary kicks in to help it out... if you have these around the wrong way you will be flooding your engine at low rpm.

yeah i checked that one... unless the injectors in the other throttle body i had were around the wrong way, then im pretty sure ive got it right. the car runs fine at any rate. just waiting on aerotech to email me back so i can start on the cosmetic side of things... 8)

What are you after from aerotech? The front spoiler he sells dosent fit the later model front bumper bar with the fog lights, so you'd have to get the full front replacement. Everything else is gold however, he does awesome work. I have a 3 piece im not using.

i'm after a full front bumper anyway, my one's looking a little bit warped thanks to about 5 tonne of garbage truck and one dozy driver. does the aerotech full replacement have gaps for my wide bumper spotlights? (whatever theyre called)? i wouldnt mind a 3 peice but i already have a strange spoiler on mine, never seen one like it, looks to be fibreglass, and part of the boot itself :?

yup, the aerotech full replacement has spots for your larger indicators/foglights.
get a pic of that spoiler.
I have a pic of the aerotech full front replacement somewhere, ill try and hunt it out... its a black staz.
[edit]
its not a good pic unfortunatly, as far as i can see, its eaxctly the same as the ADVANCE front replacement, but with spots for the late model indicators, instead of the early ones.

Is that a one piece front bar in fibreglass job? AEROTECH where NZ?
