ANOTHER PROBLEM

Post by pcuser51 »

:) Guys after installing my intercooler (no bov yet) after a run the stazz
is very hard to start (motor still hot) pipe work from cooler that runs over
motor to the throttlebody gets very hot, i thought the problem might be
old fashioned heatsink what do you reckon :)

it usually needs about 20 starts to get use to the cooler...well mine did...dont know bout the heat though...check your intercooler...the side of the throttle bodies should be pretty cold...

hmmm, a good reason why not to run 'cooler pipes over the motor. Atleast wrap them in thermo tape.

watch that thermal wrap stuff. my old man put it on his brand new porches 911 exhaust, (only parts of it, u ever seen one of those exhausts?!?!?!?! :wtf: ) anyway, 12 months later the nice shiny exhaust was looking like shite under the wrap and parts literally started to "fall" out of it. other ppl we know have had the same prob. maybe a certain type of steel against a certain wrap? I dunno, but it rusted so badly the guy who made it refused to believe this was the exhaust he made only months be4.

my 2 cents.

I have also heard of thermal wrap causing exhaust parts to fall apart where its been wrapped, i think this is related to more thermal stress as the heat cant escape. But it shouldnt be a problem on the inlet side as the thermal wrap is there to keep your cooler pipes from being a heatsink.

I can see having a J spec Starion with the big bonnet vents is going to prove beneficial. I can open the vent, causing the top of the engine to stay fairly cool/warm instead of 'burn my underpants batman' hot. Its like a little bakehouse in there without vents.

Never wrap hot pipes. Thermal wrap is used to keep the heat out.. not to keep the heat in. Wrapping hot pipes will destroy them in no time.

The only pipe I would wrap would be the pipe between the intercooler and the throttlebody.

Yeah its the cooler->throttle body pipe he's talking about. Although the conversation kind of ended up talking about exhaust pipes somehow.

Personally I still don't see the difficulty of running the IC pipe turbo side -> decent intercooler that doesn't have intake and output ports on the same bloody side -> then come out by the battery running along the other side of the engine.

Other than running a stock style i/c.

Having the ports on opposite sides and heights forces complete use of the cooler and also ensures the air doesn't have to completely change direction. I imagine this would decrease lag and make piping in the Starion easier as well.

Plus on race day, remove headlights, one light socket provides cold air to the intake, the other could be directed to blow air on to your cooler pipe, keeping it even cooler :)

Back to the topic: My Starion also starts better when I touch the gas a little, maybe you should try this and see if it helps. But then it may just have trouble sucking through that large cooler. *shrug*
