On a friends starion (2.0L with only 80'000km's) the dipstick keeps coming out. What could cause this? blow by?

cheers

Yes blowby for sure. However check that the breathers are not blocked and also the PVC valve seals properly under boost. It should let air into the manifold from the crankcase but seal when there is boost in the manifold otherwise you will be pressurising the crankcase.

There is one temporary solution that has worked well for me. Mine was that bad that oil squirted out from under the oil cap (new oil cap too) , and under the 2 grommets holding the tappet cover.

1 : Put a spring on the dipstick to keep it in place.

2 : Remove the hose going from the charcoal canister to the accordion hose and block the hose.

3 : Remove the short hose from the oil/air seperator to the airbox and chuck it.

4 : Connect the PCV valve hose to the LOWER inlet pipe of the oil/air seperator and connect the upper oil/air seperator to the accordion hose connector.

(CONFUSED YET ??? METHODS TO THIS MADNESS :)

This ensures an almost constant supply of vaccuum on the outlet side of the PCV valve , and sucks (with more pressure cause it's not using weak vaccuum inside the airbox) the oil fumes directly through the oil/air seperator , thus reducing crankcase pressure.

There are some who will say "it could fuck your turbo" and lots of other crap , but I thought about this for ages and it makes sense. My engine has chronic blowby (after removing wastegate hose and seeing where my fuel cut limit was , probably broke a ring land) , and since doing this mod , I have done over 10000k's without any smoke blowing out the exhaust , virtually no oil in the accordion hose , and the car does not consume oil. Sounds too good to be true but it works.

I can post pics on the weekend if required. Hope this might give you a few more options.

Dipstick popping out too

Well mine is also popping out, but not as violently as it did the first time at 150,000kms (which exploded oil all over the turbo!). mrb1, can you please describe which breathers you're referring to and the wha the PVC valve is? If it's not sealing, is it just a matter of replacing with a new one?

Cheers
Brendan

PCV valve is at the front of the rocker cover on the right hand side. 6 sided thing that is screwed into the side, near the top. Has a hose coming off it that leads down to the centre of the inlet manifold. Take off the hose and unscrew it from the rocker cover. Wash it in petrol/cleaner and see if it works. Should be able to blow in one way, but not the other. If you can blow through both ways, then it's not right.

What you can do on cars that are breathing heavy is drill
a small hole in the dipstick tube about an inch from the top
to vent the pressure.

ok i have tried this repair and this is what i have

Top of the oil seperator now goes to the accordion
Middle of the oil seperator goes to the PCV valve at the rocker cover
Bottom of the oil seperator goes under the car some where
charcoal canister is now blocked off and goes no where
I have a hole in the top of the rocker cover that is now lonley and same with the other end of the PCV

any ideas what i should do or is it done?

Mate if dipstick pops out , do a comp test , pef a leak down test , my guess is a cracked piston ring land . (Dont let your car catch on fire) , if you fix the eng fix what caused it to break , or you will fix it twice ,
