map sensor

Post by David McLeod »

My JA may be have wrecked the MAP sensor or I may just be unlucky to have put 2 duds in. Any thoughts. I don't want to try another in case something else is causing it.

What are the problems with the car when driving it? It may be something completely different.. Map sensors stuff up a lot though.

What makes you think the MAP is dead???

I wonder if you're chasing the wrong end of the stick...

After all, knowing your map sensor is broken takes a fair bit of technical
skill.

Is it just causing the needle to jump around a bit or something? If so,
that's a common fault, and just as likely to be found on any other sensor
you come across.

There's 3 o-rings inside it, try replacing them if the guage mostly sits on zero, or doesn't respond as it should.
Davids site explains very well how to do it.

I did it to mine, and now it works a treat

edit: best part about it is:
cost of o-rings: $0.15
cost of 2nd hand MAP sensor: approx $200

Where are you located? Borrow somebody's good one and try it out. If it works, yours is the problem, if it doesn't, the problem is elsewhere.

3 map sensors have been tried. At first the car seems to be magically fixed. Then when driving and warmed up it won't idle and runs rough, stalls easily. The first 2 map sensors were opened and seemed to have electrical burns, also looks like water has been in there. Maybe they are just showing their age and it's all coincidental. The boost gauge goes crazy but may just be reflected inputs. It behaves when the car runs ok.
I've been overseas this week so have got the end of the story 2nd hand. I'll check with mechanic later in the week. The car has 1 year old genuine injectors and turbo. The engine is good so it's obviously computer, sensors etc. yuk. I'm in the Illawarra. Thanks
