Hi there
What can the gearbox handle before looking at strengthing it?

Being dropped from about 3 feet. After that bits will break off it depending where it hits and if it's on concrete or not.

unless its heavy duty then it'll take like 6 feet to brake.

Many have asked this question before, including me, and the answer has always been the same.
When you break it due to engine power (and not bad driving), replace with Supra box. Until you break it, just leave the bugger in there. It all depends on the conidition of the Starion box, and also how well you look after it.
If you were looking at over 300rwhp I would start budgeting for something to happen though. Thats not a factual figure, thats just the number that floats in my head.

First, it's not HP going through the gearbox but torque... That's probably more important, although higher RPMs do stress it out more.
The Starion gearbox is strong. Very strong. Spares are easy to get. I have three spare gearboxes and no-one has ever asked me for one. I've yet to discuss breaking one with anybody. Most gearbox issues seem to be with lack of maintenance or just wear.
You can safely buy a Starion that's 25 years old almost, and still feel reasonably confident that it's gearbox will be OK without even looking.
And I have never heard of one just letting go because of too much stress.
(And I have heard of other gearboxes letting go under stress... )
Putting it simply, it doesn't get much better than that.
The rationale for the supra box upgrade is the different ratios.

Thats good to hear.
If you damage a syncro, whats the basic deal regarding having it repaired? Do you get a donor gearbox, or can they just replace the syncro?

and, is the input bearing a standard part, is it hard to replace???

Dont think its too tricky. When I had my gearbox rebuilt they replaced all the bearings and seals. The most expensive part of the rebuild was the new clutch and driveshaft. They didn't charge me for half the labour, but I beleive the bearing/seals etc came to around $NZ500.
I didnt get a quote on the syncro, because it wasnt a problem until they changed the grade of trans oil. Took 5 mins for the gearbox to warm up before I could downchange to 2nd. Im thinking the previous oil was hiding the problem, and I should give it attention while I have the chance, before I put it in the X.

Whats a gearbox reco worth? my 2nd gear syncro in my old staz felt like it had served it's time, was gonna get it reco'd till a unfortunate happening occured :(
