white smoke out of breather

Checked out a JB for a mate yesterday (havn't checked for lsd yet;)). There's no smoke out of the exhaust, after idle when hot or on boost / revs, but there is a constant white (coolant i beleive) smoke stream coming out of the breather hose (which was tucked under the car).
Is there a chance it could be a gasket problem, leaking coolant into somewhere somehow causing it to burn off, but only through the breather? cracked head maybe?
other then this problem it has slipping clutch and sunfaded paint, a bit rough but he's all keen to buy it if this prob isn't major. and especially gonna get it if both rear wheels spin the same way

Do a compression test. What's the oil cap look like? Chocolate mousse on the underside, traces of water?
Sounds like coolant burning off as you said. And why do you think the hose was under the car...... sounds dodgy as a $3 bill.

are you talking about the radiator/overflow breather? or an oil breather??

Blowby can look white when it starts to get bad.

breather on top of rocker
compression test tomorrow, plus i'll check for Chocolate mousse & LSD
i'm not up to date with blowby, eg, there is some that is normal right? or different between valves and rings?
just very confused at how the exhaust isn't blowing any smoke as well

Also pull the radiator cap and look for bubbles (when it's running)
Depends where a crack is, could be anywhere, just depends what it connects to. Between cylinders makes the car chug cos one cylinder pressurises the other, a leak between head and an oil gallery will milkify the oil, crack between head and water gallery will produce steam and bubbles in the radiator cos of the pressure.
Have fun....

I've had a crack in the block between the bore and a water gallery, it made white foam of my coolant after a while. Not nice. What you really want to do is a leakdown test, but i suppose your mate isnt keen to head to a workshop for that?
Compression test, if you get none at all, and the engine turns over fast and smooth just on the starter motor, then you most likley looking at a valve problem. If one cylinder is a bit down, squirt some normal engine oil in, try to get it around hte oilside of the piston, and try again. If the Compression picks up, then your looking at rings.
Deeks, if it has an LSD, you HAVE to buy it.. have you checked for the code on the firewall?

would result in exhaust smoke. cracked head seems the logical. thanks anyway guys but he didn't want the hassle of fixing it so no buy :(
